MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUXpiVn311,0110' OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1933. PAGE THREE; .1 KEMAL ENLISTS TO Economic Rebirth of Country Promised Young Republic Zones to Be Established for Administration Ideas By Prlscllla Bine ,. ANGORA (AP) Economic rebirth for Turkey; this Is what Mustapha Kemal, maker of mighty reforms, Is now promising his young republic. His recent tour of Inspection, by sea and by land, has already brought forth the major decision to divide Turkey Into economic zones, each of which will constitute an administra tive unit. The present administra tive divisions, called vilayets, each of which has its governor and separate budget, will be scrapped to give way to the new repartition. In making the new economic administrative map of Turkey, such factors as agricultural and mineral 1 resources. Industries, commerce, and means of transportation will guide the map-maker's band. To Exploit Mineral Wealth Along with this reform the Kemal lst government U launching a big drive to discover and exploit Ana tolia's largely untouched mineral rtcheo. A new law reducing govern ment taxes and transport charges will lower the price of Turkish min erals 50 per cent a ton. Heretofore the exorbitance of these charges made foreign minerals cheaper In Turkey than the local product. An English expert, engaged by the government to study Anatolia's min eral resources, reports a wealth of chrome, managanese, copper, lead, and antimony, and advises govern ment exploitation. To make possible the exploitation and transport ation of copper from the rich Argana mines, the govern ment Is emitting a six million dollar Internal loan to build a railroad con necting Argana with the Fevzl Pasha Dlarbekir line. The "Policy of Steel" Kemal's "policy of steel" refuses to bow to the world crisis. The govern ment, far from abandoning' railroad construction, Is now negotiating with foreign groups for the construction of an Important new line 279 miles long, to connect Slvas and Erzeroum. Another "rebirth" measure Is Kemal's engagement of foreign ex perts to reform and build up Turk ish economy and finance. An Ameri can, Robert Vorleld, la already work ing on the reform of customs ad ministration. Another American, Wallace Clarke, now in Paris, has Just been engaged to reform the state monopolies, the chief of whicn are tobacco, alcohol and alcoholic drinks. salt and sugar. Such Is the new vogue for foreign experts, that one a German has even been engaged to advise on tneans of transforming Mt. Olympus, Broussa, Into Turkey's first center for winter sports.
