women's first debate teams of Al
bany colege defeated two teams from
Oregon Normal, March 6, debating on
the war debt question. Clare Stewart
of Albany and Helen Wilson of Med
ford won a 2 to 1 decision In their
contest, and Earl Horsell of Shedd and
Fred Neal of Portland defeated their
opponents, 3, to 0.

Garden club Is planning, will be held
Friday and Saturday of this week
from 8:30 to 8 o'clock In the Gore
building next to the Cupp Furniture
store on East Main.
Mrs. L. Bundy will be assisted by
Mrs. H P. W.. Spllver. Mrs. E. B.
Wilson. Mrs. C. L. Goff and other
members of the club In arranging
the plants and shrubs and acting as
saleswomen.
Those who will donate plants,
shrubs or seeds are asked to bring
them directly to the place of sale.
A special request for contributions
of seeds la being made In order that
they may be given out free to chil
dren who agree to plant their own
gardens. Not only Garden club mem
bers, but any one who has anything
In the way of shrubs, seeds or plants
to contribute for the sale, Is asked
to co-operate In an effort to help
beautify Medford homea and provide
gardens at least cost.

Ninnle E. Greene died at her home
on South Central avenue this morn-
tnir. at the age of 80 years. She naa
resided here for the past 10 years,
comlnz from Harrison, Arkansas,
where her husband passed away
1917. During their long residence
there, Mr. Greene was a leading busi
ness man and bank president.
Mrs. Greene waa a member or tne
Episcopal ohurch and waa loved by
all who came to know her.

C. Charley, southern Oregon pioneer,
who passed away Sunday in his 77th
year from heart failure.

Medford, has arrived and assumed

Mr. Johnstone has been In the hotel
business for many years, during
which time he was connected with
the Canadian Pacific Railway hotel
system, also with California and Ha
waiian hotels and resorts. The past
few years he has been associated with
Mr. Denson.
Mr. Johnstone Bays he has always
liked the Rogue River valley, has
been particularly impressed with the
metropolitan appearance of Medford
and la glad to become associated with
the business of the city.

AWNING IN BLAZE
AT HOTEL ALLEN
City fire department was called at
12:4u today to the Hotel Allen, to
extinguish an awning. Little damage
resulted from the blaze, which was
soon under control. At 7:30 o'clock
last night, the fire department an
swereo a call to 1024 North Central
avenue to extinguish a flue fire.

that In their search of the Banks,
home they had found "plenty of evi
dence," and that they had taken
fingerprint from many articles In
the Banks home. Several sets of
fingerprints have been aent to the
National Bureau of Identification at
Washington, D. C, for confirmation,
and the past records, if any.
Since last fall a legend has been
prevalent among adherents of Banks,
that he wore money belts containing
large sums of money. He had "a
couple of dollars" In his possession
when searched. At one of his cm.
suit hearings, Banks flashed a small
roll of bills, patted his chest sig
nificantly, and aald: "There's more
wheie theee came from." His boasted
wealth has not materialized. Banks
was fingerprinted and photographed
yesterday, in the Josephine county
Jail.

yesterday at the county Jail, and all
visitors must have a written order
from the circuit court. Tuesdays,
Thuisdays and Saturdays were named
as visiting days, from 9:30 to 11:30 in
the morning, and from 1:30 to 4:30

evening that the Shasta will be dis
continued March 37 between Grants
Pass and Eugene. Such a step la being
taken, due to the decreased travel.

The beer bill, passed In both the
house of representatives and the sen
ate, Is expected to go to President
Franklin D. Roosovelt tomorrow for
his signature, and this evening Mayor
E. M. Wilson will appoint a commit
tee of seven citizens to consider local
beer legislation.
Mayor Wilson announced this
morning that seven Medford citizens
will be named by him at tonight's
council meeting, to confer with the
license committee of the council. The
group Is expected to formulate a regu
latory measure for the sale of the
beverage In thla city, he aald.

gon Salea company announced this
morning that the company had book
ed more orders for eastern ahlpments
during the paat week than any time
aunng tne past month.

orders from, Mr. Owen said, and they
turned down several cars on account
of prices, which they would have
booked previously.
