A. BANKS, FORMER EDITOR OF THE MEDF0RD NEWS, HAS SHOT AND KILLED OFFICER PRESC0TT, WHILE THE LATTER WAS ENGAGED IN THE REGULAR PERFORMANCE OF HIS DUTY. THIS ENDS THE DASTARDLY CAMPAIGN OF IN FLAMMAT0RY AGITATION, THE CONTEMPTIBLE CIR CULATION OF LIES AND FALSEHOODS, WHICH HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THIS COMMUNITY FOR SO LONG, WITH JUST ONE PURPOSE IN VIEW TO DESTROY THIS COMMUNITY, TO ALLOW ONE MAN TO DOMINATE IT, AND BY ARMED FORCE, THREATS AND BLACKGUARD ISM ESCAPE THE JUST PENALTIES WHICH THE LAW PROVIDES I BUT THE END OF THIS REIGN OF TERROR, GRATE- FUL AS IT "WILL BE CAN 'T A FAITHFUL AND FEARLESS CURE THE HEART BREAK OF FAMILY, CAN NEVER RECONCILE THIS COMMUNITY TO THE LOSS IT HAS SUSTAINED. IT IS, WHAT WE SO FEARED IT WOULD BE, TOO GREAT A PRICE TO PAY! Justice Is Demanded WE REALIZE the intensity of publio feeling, we appreciate the temptation at such a time to countenance-extremo measures. s But we have as a community fought for law and order, fought for backing the law enforcement agencisj in the fearless and legal performance of their duties, LET'S NOT ABANDON THAT FIGHT NOWI . . ' It's a time for cool heads, and the sort of restraint, tempered by absolute determination to secure prompt and certain justice, that we need now, that we must now maintain, to prevent one unerasible blot upon the reputation of this community, being followed by another. Once more to be "good soldiers I Being a good soldier in this critical hour, means standing togethor determined and united, and crushing out lawlessness, no matter where it raises its ugly head, determined, every one of us that this community return at onoe to its former proud position, and that it return by upholding the law, and seeing that the punishment provided by law, is carried out to the fullest extent 'the law allows. Two, not One TTJE HASTEN to make a correction: ' In our congratulations to 0. S. C. for winning the coast basketball title we opined it was the first championship for Oregon since "betV dee wah' We had in mind the university's football title after which they tangled with Harvard at the Rose Bowl. It seems that the University of Oregon won the coast basket ball title in 1919, Not only that, but our own Eddie (Dr.) Durno was a member of that team; and Carter Brandon, anoth er Medford. boy. was a first-string sub. The University of California was the chiefcontcndcr then, and the boys from Eugene ran circles around the bojg from Berkeley. So the editorial "Homer" nodded a trifle. This does not detract from the triumph of 0. S. CI, to which "Red" McDonald of this city contributed so expertly, but while bouquets are being passed around, the U. of 0. basketball tossers of 14 years ago. should be included. "We trust this makes the record clear. Instend of one coast title in athletics since the war, the number should be two. Let the Record Show JUDGE FKIIL demands, that the oounty journal show he op posed the order signed by a mnjority of the county court, abolishing the office of probation officer, held by Amos Walker. An exoellent idea, We trust the journal will not only show it but the PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER IT, Judge Fehl was elooted on a campaign of strict economy, of relieving the tax payers, of eliminating whnt he called waste and graft in oounty administration. Yet immediately after he took office, he revived the anti quated position of probation officer, and placed Walker in chargo, on a monthly salary. Just what the probation officer did, to earn his salary, or what he was expected to do, no one seems to know Perhaps an audit of the county records will bring this to light. Wo hope so. The appointment was so obviously a political one, and tho increased expense to the tax payers, under present conditions, so plainly unnecessary that the last grand jury recommended that the sineoure be abolished, and probation work be taken over by the members of the county court as before. Yet when a majority of the county court follows out this reoommendation Judge Fehl protests and insists the records show his protest. We are sure that will be perfectly satisfactory to the people, if it is to Judge Fehl. Simply Incredible "THOSE whom the Gods would destroy they first make mad." It is simply incredible, -that any group of people on the surface of this globe, so nearly destroyed by the last war, should be even contemplating another war. Tet for days all prest dispatches from Europe, hae agreed, that another war threatens. The main trouble seems to proceed from Germany under Ilitler and Italy under Mussolini. A military alliance between these two Fascist dictators is reported, and an outbreftk in the Tolish corridor is feared. VTe still believe that reason and enlightened self interest will prevail. For if it doesn't nothing is more certain than this: Another war will do to all Europe what the world war did to Russia destroy everything that is known as civilization and orderly government, and throw the human race serosa the sea, buck into the tooth aud claw struggle of the jungle. INHERITED PROGB ES3IVE DEAFNESS Otoclrlo0U It tha medical term unhappily applied to a form of deaf new that seem to be hereditary In many caeea and oonatltutea at least one fourth of all tMbiei of deafneaa develop ing in youth or adult life. It beoomea ob vloiu when one haa heard what the authorities nave to say about this condition chat no one k nowi m u h about Its cause or Its treatment. Hire are few gen eral observations made by otologists who have seen many eases and stud led tome of them. Th dearness develops first at the age ot 30 of thereabouts In njoat case. Women are more common'y affected than men. The history of othf cases of progressive deafness Jn tv.e family la noted In nearly half of the cases. Tinnitus (head noises) and somo dizziness or vertigo la com plained of In a third of the cases. There is no Inflammation, of the ear structures. The condition Is pure ly a nutritional change, akin to rick ets. Perhaps this Is the reason Why we know so little about the treat- ' mnf. Af JltsMLMomtlai Vrnm Vss nsn eral consensus of otologists who have had much experience with the con dition it would seem that the less local treatment of the ear or adja cent structures the better. Of course there Is even greater urgency to re move or disinfect a focus of Infection If th examination reveals evidence of a septic focus, than there would be m the ordinary clroumatance. But the greatest promise of benefit from treatment lies in efforts to Improve the general hygiene, the patient's ways of life, the habits, and In pro viding the roost favorable factors for nutrition. Vitamin A is especially Important for persons with otosclerosis. It Is well worth while for any such suf ferer to take a ration of cod liver oil for a season, to see whether it will not do good In one way or another delay progress of the deafness, even improve the hearing, or relieve the distress from tinnitus or giddiness. For the same reason, to get more vltairln A, otosclerosis patients ahould Communications They Are Out Also To' the Editor: We, the undersigned,'-Joined the Good Government Congress In good faith, being told that It stod for law and order, upholding the constitu tion of the country and this state, and he principles upon which this country was founded. Otosclerosis victims must overcome all weather or air phobia and take advantage- of every opportunity for outdoor life, for the Influence of the fresh air and sunlight, the ultra violet, favors normal nutrition too. They should bear closely In , mind that their deafness or ear trouble Is unlike the Inflammatory troubles due to infections, and hence they cannot be guided by the notions of such persons about exposure to cold or wet. Any and all weathers or sea sons are tonic, and that Is What the otosclerosis victim needs; I have just a hunch, perhaps noth ing to It, that a suitable lodln ra tion la especially good for one with otosclerosis,, and Z believe It will do no one any harm In any case send a stamped envelope bearing your ad dress and ask for Instructions for taking the lodln Ration. AND DOLLARS ROOSEVELT WILL WILL GO TO WORK BRIGHTENING CITY (Continued from Page One) money which could be legitimately spent In this campaign would pass Into the regular channels of trade by the purchase of those things so necessary to bring about the results which such a campaign would create. "The spending of this money will have a tendency to alleviate the un employment situation and many per sons can be provided with gainful occupation. 'There can be no doubt that now li the time to buy. Everything points to the fact that commodity prices are on the up-grade, and It will cost far more later on to make the Im provements needed than at the pres ent time. If everyone would realize this and know that prices are going up, and would start spending money on these Improvements now, It would have a wonderful effect on all busi ness In Medford, and would also cre ate the confidence which will carry our city to far greater accomplish ments "It has been noltced lately that property Is beginning to change hands more freely and there can be no doubt but what sales will be more pronounced within a short time. Property In god condition, and build ings nicely painted naturally are more apepallng to the prospective pur- chaisr than those which are In a dilapidated and rundown condition. This also holds true with rental, and property can be more quick iy rented when a place desired is clean and neat. A coat of paint some times makes a lot of difference. "The Chamber of Commerce this year intends to go after the tourUt business in a mutant manner and visitors to our city during the sum mer months will be far more Im pressed with Medford if everything looki spick and span, both In tho business as well aj the residential districts. It must be . remembered also that many of these visitors are not only vacationing, but are looking for new locations, new opportunities and new fields of endeavor. We hope that we shall be abl to Induce many of them to locate In Medford and if the cleanup and paintup campaign Is a success, our work with the tour ists at the chamber In selling Med ford as a desirable place in which to live, will be made all the easier. "I think our committee could well afford to also Include in Its pro gram the idea that now Is the time to build and do all kinds of repair work. As has been jald before, prices are as low as they probably will be, and no better time could be found to make Investments in new struc tures and repair old ones. We do not expect foolish or extravagant spending, but a sane expenditure for m-ceasary Improvements. "We want the cooperation of every one to make our oduipalitn the most successful ever attempted in south ern Oregon, and the following results will bo brought about: 1. Additional employment will be founrt. , 3. Business and trade will be stim ulated.' 3. Public confidence In Medford wlU be encouraged. 4. Idle and hoarded dollars will flow into business channels. 5. Property will rent and sell quicker. 8. Visitors to olty will be greatly Impressed. 7. Cleanliness will be promote J, creating happier citizenship. The completed plana of the com mitter are expected to be announced at an early date. t 18 SIGN FOR CJ.T.C. VANCOUVER BARRACKS, Wash Mar. 16. The special article said Senator Steiwer expressed belief congress It self should cut veterans' allowances, "but not more In proportion than the salary rolls." - The dispatch- continued "state menta that congress Is Impotent to deal with budget balancing he termed little less than slanderous.
