laoking the past few months so paralyzed by internal dissen
sion and strife, SUDDENLY came to life from the shock of a
new crisis, and today the wheels of local business are turning

These representatives of the
weeks of discussion and paintnking investigation, passed a sales
tax.
At the outset of the session a majority in both Houses op
posed a sales tax. But the MORE the entire tax problem was
studied, particularly the absolute necessity of radically reducing
the property tax, the more CERTAIN it became, that SOME
sort of sales tax was ESSENTIAL.
A HIGHER income tax wag passed, tithing taxes were ap-
proved, the intangibles tax was retained, but even then,
to balance the budget a sales tax was mandatory.
All in all, we believe the legislature did a good job, of solv
ing the tax problem. We also believe that this tax program,
the result of many weeks of careful study and exhaustive dis
cussion, should be given a fair trial before any attompt to mod
ify or ohange it is'made.
TTOE proof of the pudding is in the eating. Let's see how this
. plan works, BEFORE we seek, through direct legislation,
to upset it,

program is unavoidable, then let's start studying the tax situa

THE opposition to a sales tax, proceeds largely from a failure
to realise that it is an EMERGENCY tax.
There is a strong prejudice
deep-seated feeling that it places an undue burden upon the
poor man particularly upon the farmer.
Suoh opposition might be justified during normal times, but
these times are not normal. Far
abnormal.
If the budget could be balanced without some form of sales
tax, no one would be for it. But

lOREOVER if state bankruptcy is to be avoided, the tax on
real property particularly on farm property MUST be
radically reduced.
To do this, under present conditions, an income tax is insuf
ficient, tithing taxes ae insufficient, an intangible tax Is insuf
ficient but these taxes, "WITH some form of sales tax, ARE sufficient.

members of the legislature after studying the problem from
all angles, came to realize this, and only because of that that
the sales tax finally passed.

on the premises. At present the
health or sanitary authorities are al
together too diffident about Insist
ing on tbls real precaution. And
the people, too, especially people who
make so much noise about their
cleanliness, are altogether too com
placent about eating with unwashed
hands and patronizing lunch places
where the facilities for simple de
cency are nothing less than filthy.
The correspondent's trouble began
when his status changed from em
ploye to merchant. Psychic change

iety, worry, anger, suspicion, Jeal

Tattoo.

to remove tattooed designs from the
skin. My young son was foolish
enough to have a picture put on his
arm, and Is now very anxious to get

lead, and the baby had gnawed It
away. Babies usually get over the
pica at the age of two or three years.
