The middle of the week Mr. and Mrs. Alfred 8. V. Carpenter returned from an extensive stay In southern California and were welcomed by many friend. Mr. and Mrs. Oorbtn Edgell and Mrs. Alios Holloway are also home from the south. Mrs. Porter J. Warner-Becker Bethrothal Told At Kappa Dinner An interesting announcement to members of the younger set was made Inst wee!: at Oregon State oollege, where the betrothal of Miss Winifred Warner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. w j. Warner of this city, to Maxwell Becker of Caldwell. Idaho, was told at dlnr.tr at the Kappa Kappa aamma house. Miss Warner Is a sophomoro at Ore iron Btate college and Mr. Becker a senior -In commerce. Dsto of the marriage was not revealed. Miss Warner and her fiance are guests this week end at the Warner home, naving arnvea many irom the Corvallls oampus. They will re turn to school late today. Deuel, a charter member of the visiting club, gave by request. "Reminiscences of the Wednesday Study Club." and Mrs George O. Bu banks "Scribe" of the Ashlsnd group, brought forth her psrrhment scrolls, snd unfolded many wlerd tales, drawn from ths archives of an earlier day. Mrs. J. W. McCoy. In her Inlmltsble wsy. reviewed "The Mother" a novel written (and also translated into Eng lish) by a Japanese author. A brief (ketch of the "Life and Works of Beethoven" was given by Mrt. H. T. Mttchelmore. who Mnlult tl. km. Tsra with a wonderfully sympathetic interpretation of his beautiful "Moon light Sonata" In pleasing verse, Mrs. Cochran extended thanks and appre ciation to ths Ashland Study club snd Mrs. Swedenburg for a delight ful afternoon. Splendid Program Pleases Many at Colonial Affair An afternoon of cards, seasoned with a lovely program of music was enjoyed by many local aoolety folk Thursday afternoon, when they gath ered at St. Mark's Guild hall for the colonial tea of the guild. Llghte were shaded with long strenmers In pas tel colors, suggestive of spring, for the hour of tes. Miss Gersldlne Thompson, local violinist, entertained with two com positions, "Amouf Coquette" by it Frlml and Beethoven's Minuet, ac companied at the piano by Miss Mar garet Chlldera. Both appeared In enchanting colonial costumes. Miss Ellow Mae Wilson, popular soprano, sang "Take Joy Home" by Baasett and whistled "One Alone." (Frlml). She was accompanied at the piano by Miss Dorothy Reynolds. Prises at cards were awarded Mrs. Josephine Cleric in contract, Mrs. Harry Nordwlck In pivot. Mrs. H. O Wilson in progressive. Mrs. Prank Roberts received the guest prise, whloh wss a beautiful plant, donated by the Medford Green house. Washington Tea Lovely Event of Friday Afternoon A candle lighting ceremony la which many past presidents of the Washington Parent-Teacher associa tion participated, was one of the most Impressive features of the Washington tea held at the school Prlday afternoon. The annual event was attended by about 100 guests and an Inspiring address was given by Mrs. Wm. Kletzer of Portland, prominent In child welfsre work in the state. Mrs. Kletzer told of the progress of Parent-Teacher work and of the child welfare bills now before the state legislature. Colonial decorations were much In evidence at the tea and three love- ly old tea services, one belonging to the Washington school, one to Mrt. Oeorge Canode and another to Mrt, George Henselman. Participating in the candle light- Ing ceremony were: Mrs. Harry Wortman, charter member. Mrs. W P. Brown, Mrs. A. . Moore, Mrs. C. C. van Scoyoc, Mrt. volney Dixon, Mrt. Holiday Luncheon Enjoyed by D. A, R. At Local Church ' The small parlor of the Presby terian church wst the scene Wed nesday of the annual Washington's birthday luncheon, for the D. A. R. The tables were lovely . with can dles and floral, decorations. Many beautiful silver' pieces graced the table and a number of pictures, hooked rugs and an old fashioned spinning wheel gave ' a Colonial touch. Questions and answers on Colonial customs enlivened the luncheon hour. Ellow Ma Wilson delighted with a song of George Washington's time and gracefully responded to an encore with a - whistling number, "Ail Old Song," Imogene Wallace gave lovely piano numbers. Mrs. Holt had prepared an Inter esting paper, "Colonial Costume, and with many quaint illustrations was a feature of the afternoon, A social hour wss enjoyed and msny guests greeted.
