The President-elect had spent the night as the gueot of hie successor as the head of the state government, Governor Herbert H. Lehman, after having attended the annual dinner of the Albany legislative correspona ents' association last night. Heavy Police Guard. The Roosevelt party was escorted to the city line by Albany police on motorcycles and In "prowl cars." The entire route from the executive man sion to the new Hudson river bridge was lined with uniformed policemen. Secret service operatives, plain clothes city detectives and state troopers also were on duty to protect the next President.- Thv Roosevelt home ftt Hyde Park Is about 70 miles from Albany. The President-elect to all effects completed his cabinet last night with the announcement that George H. Dern, former governor of Utah, would be his secretary of war. Douglas Budget Director. He also gave a surprise with the statement that Rep. Lewis Douglas, youthful Arizona advocate of econ omy in government, would be his new bud get director. AT GOLF COURSE A point par tournament will be the chedule for the Rogue Valley Golf club this week end, held for the benefit of the county welfare ex change. Inability to establish handi caps, according to Jack Hueston, made It Impossible to hold a handi cap match, so the point-par was sub stituted. Play will be Saturday and Sunday, and with the weather steadily Im proving one of the largest crowds of the year Is expected. All proceeds from the tourney will go to the wel fare exchange, to help care for the poor and unfortunate during the re mainder of the winter. "Merale Is eight years old and very fat and. when she Is taken for walk, she always parks until she reaches the end of the first block, after which her deportment Is moat dignified. She likes to sleep In fire places. loathes the resultant baths. and never makes a fuss over anyone except Mrs. Roosevelt. Before he went away to scnooi. Meggle" used to belong to the Roosevelts' youngest son, John. After he left, she attached herself to Mrs. Roosevelt. Until recently she divided her time between Hyde Park and Al bany, but she Is living at present at 40 East 65th street, the Roosevelt town house. Someone gave her a bright red collar for Christmas with a silver plate on It, bearing the Inscription, "Meggle the White House wash- Ington." She wasn't much Interest ed In tt, however. "Major." a handsome buff and black German shepherd, trained for police work, was presented to Presl dent-eleot Roosevelt several yeara ago by the troop of state police to which Sergeant Earl Miller, then Ms body guard, was attached. His present ad dress Is Krum Elbow, the Roosevelt estate at Hyde Park. There are several other police dogs there, and It's "Major's" Job to keep them In order. He himself has trick which Is frequently misunder stood. He walks up to each visitor, takes the visitor's wrist gently but firmly In his teeth, and scrutinizes him before he lets him In, It makes "Major" unpopular with some visitors, but he really doesn't mean any harm It's part of his training as an alert dog. Dot" lives at Hyde Park now, too. She also formerly belonged to the state troopers, the Roosevelts having traded another saddle horse for her.
