Tourney Opens Local Golf Season Today

This was the statement given out
by A. P. Johnsen. chairman of the
tournament committee of the Rogue
Vslley Oolf club In spesklng of the
'blind bogey" tournament to open
the golf season today. Membera and
non-members will take part In the
tourney, and Judging from the
crowds attending the tournaments
for turkeys held last fall, at leut
100 players are expected.
Hams For Winners
Earlier In the week, a general bluv
ard and storm over the United
States made It look bad for the tour-
nament, but as the Rogue River val
ley escaped the storm the tourna
ment will go on as scheduled, John
sen said. Hams will be given for
prizes Instead of turkeys, and an
average of one ham for every four
players will be given out.
Members and non-members will
select handicaps before starting, with
the members playing for a net score
of 70 and non-members for a net
score of 755. Many foursomes have
already been made up, as tne tour
nament has been the chief toplo of
conversation among golfers of the
yalley for the past week.

in a preliminary Central Point
defeated the Tiger Cubs 29 to 25.

Central Point's basketball team
stayed In the running for the cham
pionship of the secondary league last
night by defeating the Jacksonville
team, 22-20,
Central Point played hard and fast
throughout the game, but was almost
caught flat-footed by the unexpected
strength of Jacksonville. O. Casad of
Centra! Point was high point man of
the evening with 8 points, while Hess
snd Ward of Jacksonville esch got 7
points.
The Central Point girls won from
Prospect, 37-11.

WOMEN GOLFERS HAVE
ROGUE VALLEY COURSE
TO SELVES ON TUESDAY
' Ladles' day at the Rogue Valley
Oolf course this year will be Tues
day, lnstesd of Wednesday as In pre
vious years, according to an en
bouncement made this morning by
Jack Hueston, professional at the
club.
1 Play by the women of the dub
will start Tuesday with a blind bogey
handicap tourney. Regular Tuesday
events will be played until Tuesday.
April 4, when a point par play will
tart. April 11' will be a blind hols
tournament. April 18 rotation golf,
and on April 25 the qualifying rounds
for the Scotch tournament will be
played. An obstacle tournament will
be played May 2.
Other feature plays are scheduled
for Tuesdays following, and en Inter
esting season of golf Is expected. A
trophy for the women will be put up
gain this season by Larry Schade,
who furnished the last trophy won
"for keepa" by Mrs. J. C. Thompson.

Pacific Northwest Oolf association
championship tournament will be
held during the week of June 34 to
July 1, directors of the association
decided today at their annual mid
winter executive meeting. The tour
nament already had been awarded to
the Vlotorla Oolf club.

The Washington legislature appears
to be headed for the same .old last
minute jam with the usual talk of a
"special session" going the rounds In
the capltol.
While the senate worked through
morning and afternoon sessions on
minor bills and the house was ad
journed for the week-end, It was
pointed out that only one piece of
major legislation has been approved
by both chambers In the first 34 days
of the 60-day session.- . .

COST IRONED OUT
Ashland citizens Friday, following a
conference with landowners along the
proposed Ashland unit of the Pacific
highway, reached a compromise agree
ment, and secured promises that
right-of-way costs would be reduced
to a point near the. figure the state
highway, commission Is willing to pay.
The cost has. been cut to 16,000. The
highway commission placed Its figure
at $12,000. A week was allowed for
adjudication.
Options have been secured on the
following land, from the owners: Mra
D. H. Jackson, $9000. O. F. Billings.
$3250; C. J, Ferrlne 22So and Mrs.
Lena Phillips $500. This land lies
outside the city limits of Ashland. No
action has been secured yet on land
inside.
It Is confidently expected by Ash
land citizens that the state highway
commission, at a hearing to be called
soon, will take steps towards con
struction on the Ashland unit.

PORTLAND, Feb. 11. (API A fed.
eral grand Jury late Friday returned
an indictment against Edison Tupper,
Klamath Indian, accused of murder,
and against John M. Olover of Klam
ath Falls, former assistant cashier in
a bank there, charged with embezzle
ment. In all, 37 Indictments were
returned.
