DAYTONA BEACH, 71a, (AP) 13-mUe stretch of ocean besczi, 800 feet wide, paralleled on one side by a receding surf, shimmering with white-caps In a brilliant sun, and on the other by high. Irregular sand dunes, lined with thousands of excited spectators That, In brief. Is a picture of the famous racing strip where Sir Mal colm Campbell of England will seek to better bis own world sutomonue speed record of 353 miles an hour. The trials, set for the middle oi February, will mark his fourth as sault upon the record here. Rolled out smooth ss a blulard table and packed down hard as eon' crete by the pounding waves, the course presents faollltles for high speed racing that have been found nowhere else In the world. Located In the middle of the sandy stretch Is the officially measured mile. over which CampbeU hopes to dash In leas than 14.7 seconds, the time for the existing record. Tsklng a five-mile rolling start, the driver shifts Into high gear as quickly as possible and presses the long ac celerator to the floorboard. In order that bis giant 2800-borsepower "Blue. bird" may pick up Its maximum speed before entering the cfflolal mile To the excited spectators in the grandstand, who train binoculars on the distant horizon, the hurtling car at first appears as a tiny speck. Fast' er. faster it rushes wish Increasing acceleration, barely skimming the crystal sands. A Roar And He's Cone. Suddenly, with a mighty roar, the machine, like a speeding , arrow, streaks past the grandstand in a blue- lh blur. Then, almost before the spectators can turn their heads to follow its course, the car has dlsap' peered In the distance, to come to a gradual stop five miles away. After a careful Inspection of the trim machine, the driver Jumps back into the cockpit for another mad rush over the course. Rules provide that he must mske two runs, one with the wind end the other against it. The seoond must be completed not more than an hour after the start of the first. At the start and finish of the meas ured mile, a wire is stretched cross wise of the beach, about three Inches above the sand. When the wheels of the speeding car strike the wire, the aotlon throws a switch, which in turn oa usee an electric apparatus to regis ter the time tne big machine enters and leaves the official mile. Averaging the elapsed time for the two runs, and dividing It Into 8800, or the 'number of seconds In an hour, the average speed in miles per hour is computed. That method Is em ployed by officials because It Is more accurate than averaging the miles per hour for the two trials. Applause His Only Reward. . Dp end down the 13-mile stretch la an elaborate network of telephone wires. 8tsttoned at esoh mile-post is a course attendant, who keeps timing officials advised of the progress or the csr. If the trisls are successful. Camp bell returns to the grsndstand where he is given an ovation by the oheer Ing crowds. A brief interview with newspapermen and then he motors to his hotel to rest another speed rec ord to bis credit, . . ' What's left In Hats now asoo (nd ti.oo ETHEL WYN B. HOFFMANN. Feb. 7-(AP) Babe Ruth reached bis 89th birthday today in excellent physical trim, but no closer to a solution of bis salary dif ferences with the New York Yankees The home-run king, although busily engsged getting organized for bis an nual Jaunt to Florida tomorrow, said he'd find time for a small party. "I'm going to have a cake too," be added. Ruth said he would hav no chance to see Col. Jacob Rubbert, Yankee owner, before hla departure, for the south and that any conferences over the salary question would have to be held in Florida. The Yankeee nave offered the Babe 880,000 for 1838, compared with the 878.000 be drew last season. LONG SHOT WINS AND FEW REJOICE By ALAN OOCLT, (Assoolsted Press Writer.) There was lot of second guessing at Axua Oallsnte t'other day, writes William Wsrne, when King Jack came In a winner and paid 8831 each on the pair of 83 parl-mutuel ticket which tabbed him that way. If all the people who said they had tended to bet oh King Jack and had been dissuaded for one reason or another actually bad put up their oash, the payoff would have been little better than even mvney. The good ladv was Impressed and ftualty consented to bet it on aa- toher horse. Only two persons held mutual tlck- tss on King Jack, but more than a score bet on him through the books at 18 to 1. And were they tit to be tied when the mutuel prices went up? One woman tearfully tore ber bookie ticket to pieces, then pasted It up again. She apparently decided when a bit calmer that $18 for one was better than nothing. The odds, 41054 to 1, were thj bst ever paid at the border track, but they didn't constitute an all-time rec ord.
