BLASTS CHANGES
FOOTBALL RULES
Jones Breaks Silence On
Passes, Use of Hands and
Other Phases Should
Enforce Rules or Junk 'Em
By PAUL ZIMMERMAN.
Associated Press Sports Writer.
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1. (AP)
Howard Harding Jones, who ordinar
ily keeps his tongue when the mat
ter of football rules changes are dis
cussed, broke his silence today with
some pertinent remarks anent passes,
use of the hands and things.
To sum It all up, the University
of Southern California's highly suc
cessful mentor thinks the Illegal use
of hands rule should be enforced or
abolished. Pernicious passing should
have a greater penalty and the side
line play should be eliminated.
Shonld Enforce Rule.
"Tf the officials aren't going to
enforce the penalty for illegal use of
the hands,!, said Troy's head man,
"and I didn't see it "enforced all last
year, then I say take the rule out and
let everybody use 'em.
"Fifteen yards penalty might be
too much for the second Incompleted
pass In the same series of downs.
Ten Instead of the present five would
be about right. Then add 15 more for
the third pass that falls. If a team I
starts throwing the ball to the winds
let It pay for It."
Coach Jones is emphatically In fa
vor of moving the. ball In 15 yards
from the sidelines, should It be car
ried five yards or less from the boun
dary.
"The sidelines play Is Just a waste
of time, since few ever are worked
for gains and almost never foe-touchdowns."
I
Pass Limit Unimportant.
The Trojan coach, who with Lou
Little of Columbia and Nobel Ktzer
of Purdue will sit In with the rules
committee as advisors when it meets
In New York, doesn't particularly care
whether the rule is lifted requiring
that all forward passes must be made
from five yards back of the line of
scrimmage.
"If a team is willing to take Its
chances of throwing a pass oloser
than that to the line, my teams would
be willing to take the chance of hav
ing them completed."
..Coach Jones said he had no Inten
tions of suggesting any rules changes
at the meeting In regard to passes,
but if Coach Little makes his ideas
known there, be would be Inclined
to offer an opinion or two.
This business of the use of the
hands Is another thing. "I think
my team could learn to use it hands
too. You know there was no pen
alty about anything like that when I
played at Yale."

TO MEET IN FINAL
FIRST HALF TILTS
Secondary schools of the valley will
play the laat game of the first half
of their conference schedules Friday
night, with the strong Phoenix team
well In the lead at the turn. Phoe
nix may get knocked off the throne
Friday, however, because that team
plays Rogue River at Phoenix Friday,
and Rogue River defeated Jackson
ville by a larger score than did
Phoenix. Central Point trails Phoe
nix by one game, having won three
and lost one, but other teams are
farther down the line, at present.
Central Point meets Talent at Cen
tral Point Friday, and if the Pointers
win they will still have a chance to
de-throne Phoenix when the two
meet again later In the season. A
win by Talent, however, will Just
about put a kibosh on the Pointers,
as far aa the pennant is concerned.
