(API Another saving waa scored for the people of Oregon by the ways and means com mittee last night In the sum of l6.r',000, when It was voted to wipe out completely appropriations for the Pacific International Livestock Expo sition, the Eastern Oregon Livestock show, and 37 county agricultural fairs. In this the committee followed the recommendation of Governor Julius L. Meier and Budget Director Henry M. Hanzen. as made In the biennial budget. But the committee mani fested its Independence of Influence from the executive office In some other subjects considered, particular ly when It restored $6000 for main tenance of the district school at the W. o. T. O. farm home near Corval lls, which the governor's budget had disapproved. In the three fair items the Pacific International had requested 460.000 for premium payments, and the county agricultural fairs $105,000 by a l-HO mill mlllage tax that has been levied for some years. The budget recommendation ndopted by the com mittee, waa that this be eliminated. The Eastern Oregon Livestock show, which received $10,000 two years ago, had not requested arl appropriation for 1033-34, but the budget antici pated that a request would be made direct to the waya and means com mittee. The governor's budget has also disapproved a $76,000 premium request from the Oregon state fair, and recommended that It be put on a self-sustaining basis. This was not covered In last' night's action, but hints were not lacking that It would meet' the same fate as the other fairs. BE BEST HOME TALENT A brief and enthusiastic session was held last evening by Medford post of the American Legion, with reports on the home talent show to be staged by the post at the Orater lan theater February 10 and 10 tak ing most of the time According to Lloyd Williamson, chairman of the committee, the at traction will be one of the best ever staged by a local cast and rehearsals, already In progress, have all connect ed with the show In an enthusiastic mood. DUNNE WOULD KILL WOLFE CREEK ROUTE flALEM, Jan. 94. (AP) Removal of the Wolf Creek short route to the sea project from the state highway map will be demanded In a senate resolution to be introduced by Sena tor Joe E. Dunne of Portland. Senator Dunne contends that the route approved by the highway com mission Is Illogical In that It parallels an existing highway, would necessi tate the acquiring of 34 miles of light of way, and would open up no new territory, while the Scappoose Vernonla route would open up new territory. Owney Pttton, Med ford' favorite son of old Ireland, declared this morning as he leaned on his broom when a stream of water poured through the snow, sewer bent, on North Central. "There wss more water and less drainage," Owney con tinued, "and that's when they coldn't get up hospital hill with auto, horses snd buggies or horses. And I'm the guy who built the road to let folks through. "I didn't put Roxy Ann up there," he sded with a wide smile, which spread his moustache. Ml'm not claim ing that, but I did build that raid, 30 years ago, and It's there yet. Peo ple couldn't get up there to see thetr sick folks for the water and mud, and I says. 'We got to have a road.' I was street commissioner then. And they said. 'We haven't any money.' And I said, 'We'll have, a road any way, and we had It. "They allowed me 100 to get It done, and we put it In for less than that." The little Irishman dipped hla broom deeper into th snow to clear the drain near the Groceteria lot of which he Is now manager. "Wo used the standstones Bullls threw away when h built the railroad. We drove them Into the ruts and cov ered them over. Didn't take much topping with that well-drained foun dation. And you still got a road there," and with that triumphant remark, Owney moved down the street with his broom. PORTLAND, Jan. 34 Heber E.
