Csrmik of of boor flati and spsakeaslos at James Allman (left) la atandlng UNION 76 BOASTS I Since January 6, Union 76 gaso line purchased by local motorist has possessed an Increased effective octane rating which definitely places It In advance of competitive brands of motor fuel on t.he Pacific Coast, according ao an made here by o. B. Myer. Portland, district manager for the Union Oil Co. The new advance in the anti-knock rating of 70, Mr, Myer stated, la C. 8. Myer, the third that haa District Maiinger been made since t nlon Oil Co. the introduction of the orange -colored motor fuel & year ago. The new Union 70 gasoline is de signed to burn in an engine with an efficient non-luminous flame, and also to develop explosion pressures that do not exceed safety llmlU but give & smooth flow of power. In modern automobile engines, a low octane gasoline gives Imperfect com bustion, which takes the form of ft yellow luminous flame that dissipates heat units to the cylinder walla rath er than converting them Into power, and thus causes overheating of the motor. At the same ttme, the maxi mum or pesk explosion pressures de veloped under Imperfect combustion conditions are aeveral times aa great aa under proper firing; these abnor mal explosion pressures result In ex cessive wear of the cylinder walls, and main and conneotlng rod bear ings. Because of lta extremely high anti knock rating, 70 gasoline actually harnesses the heat that la wasted by the motor fuels of lower octane rating and turns it Into power that makes for belter performance of the motor. Millions of dollars In refining equipment, years of researrh work and an adequate supply of selected crudes are necessary to the produc tion of Union 76, the local district manager said, adding that the com pany la in the position of having ample quantltlea of selected crudes which yield high anti-knock gaso line. In addition, Its cracking and other refining facilities make It pos sible to Increase the octane rating ot 70 gasoline considerably above that of fuel obtained by the ordinary method of distillation. His announcements thus far and the aoundlng-out activities of hie best thinkers may have powerful po litical results. The last election show ed the east la Important only when the west and south split. Roosevelt carried the east, but did not need It. The movement for him came essen tially from the west and south. Labor pressure against selection ot Frances Perkins aa labor eecretarT has recently become so strong ah may have to be discarded. Those yarns about the Democrat going to fight Roosevelt on the sale tax were slightly off. They were du to a misunderstanding with Chair man Collier of the house ways and means committee. He wan largely responsible for the misunderstand ing. He Intended to announce that h sales tax would be smong ten meth ods to be considered by his com mittee. The way he said It led some to thli.k that was to be the big busi ness. Both he and Floor Leader Ralney sometimes have trouble in, making themselves clear. Some very prominent men have been among those trying to chisel their way Into the Inner Democratla circle here by posing as Roosevelt messengers. One of them even fooled Speaker Gamer. He thought the fel low really came from Roosevelt. Em barrassing mlsunderstsndlnga have been narrowly averted. The Democratle leadera are becom ing wary. They demand credentials from messengers now.
