urer's and clerk 'a offices were opened,
but not for business. The assessor's
office was busy extending the 1882
budget on the tax rolls. All other
offices were closed.
Judge Fehl said he would pnd
most of the day arranging matters
in his office and looking things over.
A group of friends of Judge Fehl
gathered in the courthouse corridors
shortly after 8 o'clock, and remained
until after the reception.

FARES SOUTH CUT
General reductions In Southern
Pacific's popular "tourist" one-way
and round-trip fares between Oregon
cities and California became effective
January 1, according to J. C. Carle,
local agent. Examples of the new
fares from here are: 1 12.00 one-way
and 16. 00 round-trip, San Francisco,
and $21.50 one-way and $28.70 round
trtp, Los Angeles. Fares on a similar
low basis will be offered to other
California cities.
These fares are on sale dally, J. C.
Carle said, and are good for travel In
chair cars or In tourist sleeping cars,
the latter plus berth charges as low
as $1.50 for night ride. Tickets sold
at these fares will carry new privileges
in the form of five-day limit on one
way tickets, 21-day return limit on
round-trips. Stopover privileges will
be allowed on both one-way and
round-trip tickets. Free baggage
allowance Is 100 pounds.

McCLOUD. Jan. 2. (Spl.) Mrs.
Ohrt played Sant Cfaua to some of
the kiddles in the neighborhood. She
was a typical Santa until she began
to talk, waen a four year old girl said
"Oh, that'y a lady," to which she re
plied, "Well, I am Mrs. Santa Claus.
He couldn't come so J brought the
presents." The child said, "Yeh, but
what's Santa going to do now? You
got his whiskers."
BUI Cob urn has been confined to
his bed for several days with a touch
of pneumonia. It Is reported he is
better but not able to be up.
Dick Harding and family had
planned to take Mrs. Thomas and
daughter Melva, to Crater Lake lodge
for Christmas dinner but on account
of sickness and deep snow It was
called, off. The Thomases left for
their home in Los Angeles Friday.
Glenn Tynes has arrived from Port
land to spend the winter at McLeod.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 2. (AP) A
suit for nearly 9200,000 damages was
filed in federal court here today
against Mnrlene Dietrich, film actress,
by the Paramount studios, charging
breach of contract.
The court action charges that she
refused to work under terms of a
$4000-a-wcek contract, and aaks that
she bo enjoined from working for an
other producor,
Emanuel Cohen, vice president In
charge of production for the studios,
explained tbe action after the suit
was filed. He said that since comple
tion of her last picture the actress
has been paid 94000 weekly on a con
tract expiring February 10,

bid of 946,505 for two and one-tenths
