WELFARE REPORTS SHOW BIG EEEORT HERE FOR NEEDY Allied Association Hears From Representatives of Units at Luncheon New Countv Aid Plans Told The Allied Welfare association met Friday at the Hotel Med ford for luncheon session presided over oy Jom O. Mann, with report given ay representative of various welfare agencies. Dr. O. I. Drummond, county phyal- rlan gave a short account of his work which covers the treatment of indi gents in all parts of the county, school and general public health work. Miss Lillian Roberta, Hed Cross secretary announced that 100 people eaJled in one day for grocery orders and that the one thousandth order blank had already been used show ing the amount of work done by the Red Cross In cooperation with the oo-irrty court. Torn DlBtrllinted Mrs. Alice Coppln of the Business and Professional Women reported that glftf. and toys collected at the organisation's Ciirlfltmas party had been given to the Red Cross for dis tribution. L. O. Oarlock, representing the American Legion told of the Legion's proposed cooperation in the matter of providing school lunches and said that the proceeds of tho Legion's New Year's dance would be used for this project. Any necessary relief for members of the Legion is also taken cars of by the oryanlwitlon, with transient members the largest prob lem, Patton Tells Pinna Hamilton Patton announced that he has been appointed by Earl Fehl to manage the county's relief work and that a complete canvaas of the county's unemployment situation would be begun at once. Believing that there la a serious lack of co ordination In the various relief agen cies, Mr. Patton plans that any re lief agency wh ich wishes any sup port from county funds, must work directly through the court as repre sented by Mr. Patton. Hereafter county work ohecks or warrants must be spent in the regu lar stores, and not at the commls asry, the latter to be used only for relief cases. Centralization Needed Rev. W. J. Howell endorsed tho plan as outlined by Mr. Patton and emphasized the need for centraliza tion of relief agencies. Miss Mildred Carlton, president of the Jackson County Public Health association, which among lta many other propectfl, helps pay the eirpenae of the county nurses reported that more than 1,000 chlldron had been thru the clinics, with approximately 100.00 received for this service, and an expense of over $3,000, paid by tho association. Miss Carlton reminded the groups of Dr. Sweet's recommendation that special attention be paid to the care ' of teeth of children of the first and second grades. County Complimented X request from the surgeon gener al of the United States for informa tlon and pictures showing the health work of Jackson county is a, tribute to the rating of the county, according to Miss Carlton. Mrs. J. Hey land of the Parent Teachers' association told about he school lunches served and the need for this service in the local schools. Mrs. Edwin L. Knapp reported the work of the Women of Rotary In con nection with assisting worthy needy families. Mrs. R. E. Green voiced her ap preciation of the response to the Christmas seal sale campaign and the fine spirit of cooperation of more than 000 women in the county who Rave their services In tills cause. Mrs. Oreen also reported the Olrl Scout work In excellent condition and re quested a large attendance at the Court of Awards ceremony January 30. "It portrays a story that empha sizes the meaning and purpose of the International Objective in all Its varied phases Institutional and per sonal aervlce and the various fjelds of opportunity In eases of physical and mental handicap, and in condi tions arising through Improper en vironment," the advance announce ments state. The picture was shown at the In ternational Klwanlan convention at Detroit and at a majority of the dis trict conventions. No One Hurt in African Quake JOHANNESBURG, UNION OP SO. AFRICA, Dec. 31. (AP) One of the sharpest earthquakes ever exper ienced in this vicinity was felt this morning over a large area of South Africa, but there was almost no ser ious damage. Herb Owen, former local mat impresario, Is ar ranging matches In the lighter weights each Monday night In the metropolis, and Virgil Hamlin, well known promoter, is staging heavy weight muscle mangling on Wednes day nights. Owen is also promoting weekly shows in Eugene and drawing big houses In the college town. Bo impressed was Llllard with the way the fans are going for the wrestling racket in Portland that he has at last agreed to heed the wishes of Medford mat fans and will stage a series of matches here, the first probably within a couple of weeks. Among the men available are Wild cat Pete, Rob Roy, Sneeze Achlu, Thor Jensen and other lighter grap plers who have been going good In Portland, as well as a number of heavyweights.
