The following program has been arranged : Christmas carols by the Crater Lake District Christian Endeavor Un ion of 50 voices, under the direction of Jeny Latham. Sinking and tap dancing by Bar bara Franklin, Ruth Harwood and Harry Fredericks, pupils of "the Eve Benson studio of dancing. Selections by Harry Fredericks and his Rung orchestra. This orchestra is composed entirely of Juveniles. Violin solos by Miss Doris O. W&ue. piano recital by Master Koger Woil. Surprise number. Awarding of prizes In the Christ, mas essay contest. Appearance of Santa Claua. Dance music by Rogue River Lum- berjacka. After the children's festivities the floor will be cleared and a free dance will be held for the older folks. Coach Henderson presented the football boys their hard-earned let ters. Mr. Marshall presented letters to the lucky Midgets who so heroic ally earned them. The true spirit of Christmas was Illustrated by Corinne Harwood In an Inspiring and devotional chalk talk, "What Christmas Means To Me.'f The seventh grade chorus brought a, Christmas message in the songs, "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful," "Shep herds," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "Silent Night." A Christmas play was offered by the Dramatic club, under .the direc tion of Mrs. Schuler. The play "Next Year Davy," written by Perclval Wilde, illustrated that toys alone do not make happiness. The cast Included the following: Harry Stanley, Frank Hull, Betty Vllm, John Kopptn, Sam Richardson, Richard ThelroUh, Naomi Jenkins, Rodney Hawkins, LaVerna Belle Vol ller, Catherine Conroy, Velma Stub blelleld. The students were dismissed by Mr. Nltzel and went Joyously home ward filled with the exultation of a week's vacation. Si. Cantata At Phoenix Christmas Evening PHOENIX, Dec. 23. (Spl.) Regu lar servic" will be held at the Pres byterian cVjurch Sunday morning and evening, with Sunday school exercises and lessons at 10 o'clock. Morning worship services are at 11 o'clock, the sermon to be "The Magnificent." Junior, senior and adults' christian Endeavor meetings will be at 6:30, and evening worship at 7:30. The church choir has arranged a Christ mas cantata, "The Lord of All," for the evening. Jap Aviators Shot Down By Chinese CHANGCHUN, Manchuria, Dec. 23. OP) Six Japanese aviators were killed and another was seriously wounded today when Chinese Irregulars shot down a bombing plane near Wan Pao-Shan. 20 miles northwest of here. The plane was bombing a concentra tion carop of irregulars. The Chinese returned the fire with sn anti-aircraft gun. xored a direct hit and the engine exploded. Christmas Program By Sunday School In Phoenix Tonight PHOENIX, Dec. 23. (Spl.) Phoe nix Presbyterian Sunday school will have a Christmas program at the church this evening. The progrsm will be In three parts, recitations by the Sunday school children, a page ant by the young people and the adults of the Sunday' school, and a Christmas party about the Christmas tree in the church parlors. Much practice and preparation have been put forth and special stage setting and scenery arranged. All in the community are cordially Invited to attend. BERLIN. (P) The government's statistical department has figured that German fathers of the low earnings group pay twice as much In taxes as do French and English in the same class. It Is announced that a German with a wife and two children who earns ftSOO a year must pay 106.60. or 21.32 per cent, for income, social and consumption taxes. This com pares with 10.09 per cent in France and 9.84 per cent In England. In the 95.000 class the ratio Is 1932 per cent here against 10.57 In Franco and 14.62 in England, the bulk in each country going for n come levies. (P) Two men, one a defeated candi date for sheriff, were found dead on Main street here last night shortly after pistol shot were heard. Police said a pistol lay be side each body and the men ap asrently bad fought a duel, but tutho Titles could not ascertain a motive. Police said one shell had been discharged from the pistol which lay near H. H. Hutto. SO, the de feated candidate. They said all five shells In the pistol near the body of David D. Farrar, 35, had been fired. Four or five bullets had struck Hutto. One had hit Farrar. STOVE 10 COOK GOLO BEACH FISH ' CLIFF, TRAVEL IS DANGEROUS Hazardous conditions In the Slskl- yous were reported this morning by Dr. P. c. Donovan of San Jose, for mer well known resident of this city, who arrived last night by motor from the south en route to Portland with his son, Berton, to spend Christmas with relatives. Arriving at the Siskiyou slope of the Pacific highway, Dr. Donovan stated, they found many cars stalled by snowbanks and one car hanging over the cliff, held to the highway only by the rear wheels. Apparently no one had been Injured, he stated. wnen the machine started over the precipice. How It was saved from going on over he did not learn. Be tween Weed and Yreka, Dr. Donovan also stated, he traveled through a terrific gale, which had blown down telephone and telegraph wires. In an st tempt to sell enough wood to purchase the stove. The father, who is an experi enced machinist, has been worklnR for a man who could not pay him In cash so gave him five tiers of lfl- lnch dry laurel wood. If the man can sell the five tiers for $10 he will be able to purchase a cook stove on which a local merchant is making htm that special price for today, and he has been given the use of s truck to deliver the wood. The case was reported to the Mail Tribune this morning by Mrs. R. E. Oreen, who will receive orders for the wood. Her telephone number is 933. One tier was spoken for at the Mall Tribune at an early hour so there are now four to be disposed of before the cook stove can be moved into the home, where the family Is now using a small heating stove and one oil burner on which to pry pare food. The father Is not asking for help from anyone and has not accepted charity, but Is a thrifty man anxious for a chance to barter, since he has been paid In wood for hie lnbor. He has no telephone so Mrs. Oreen has voluntered to take the orders for wood. Anyone who csn use a tier is asked to notify her as early as possible this evening and the wood will be delivered. ASTORIA. Ore., Dec. 23. (AP) J. R. Burke, president of the Burke Packing company, one of the leading salmon canneries on the river, died from a heart attack at Gear hart late yesterday. Burke had been a dominant fig ure In the salmon packing Industry for 35 years. In addition to his Col umbia river Interests, he owned the Gardiner Fish company at Gardiner, the Gold Beach Packing company on the Rogue river, and the Burke Pack ing company of Bay City.
