"A merry Christmas to you" the greeting dear to all Christian peoples, wherever they walk through life, echoed again and again through the old elty hall Wednesday aiternoon a throngs moved through the Wel fare Exchange to obtain clothing and gltts In return for their labor to brighten the Yuletlde, which finds them still members of the great army of unemployed, or for other reasons In need of the things that money buys. And something of the spirit of the Ohrlst-chlld pervaded the old coun cil chamber as women, with faces no longer distressed, guided their children through the busy aisles, and dolls from homes of plenty were gath ered Into eager arms, en route to homes of the needy. Many Garments Otven. your hundred and fifty garmen were passed over the counter during the day, going Into homes where warmth and respectatmllty would be Impossible except for the opportune ltles offered by the exchange. Two hundred and seventeen had been given out at 11 o'clock In the morn ing and the total had passed the 490 mark brfore the shop closed, not to be opened again until after Christ mas, Miss Helen Carlton, director 01 the exchango, announced. Script, Issued In the Welfare Ex change as reward for work, on the basis of 90 cents an hour; labor checks, Issued by the Medford Asso ciation of the Unemployed, and once la a while nickels and dimes, were In payment for articles received, all of which are marked at such price levels as one and two coats, up to 25 cents for coats and larger gar ments. It's Busy Place, Five sewing machines hummed steadily throughout the day a the needy shopped In the exchange. Un- 'der the direction of Mrs. John Fluh' rer and Mrs. Hoffman, who pre sided In the sewing room, four quilts were completed with 19 women on the Job. Each quilt ha been spoken for and will go into a home where badly needed. Men'a old knickers were made over Into little boys' trous ers, women's cast-off coata were re duced to very good looking girls' coats, and hosts of toher prsctlcal garments made by the women. There were not chairs enough for all. so the Jackson County Fair association was called and sent over tne neces sary number. People more In need of food than clothing were given script to be pre sented at the commissary of the Med ford Association of the Unemployed, and a few vegetables were placed In each basket at the exchange as a Christmas gift. Eggs for mil Folk. Fourteen dosen orocked egg were sent with one woman Into the moun tain regions, where she will share them with her neighbors. She stated that It had been two months since the last egg was used In her home. Meat drippings, to be used as lard, were also sent to the same commun ity. - Since the opening of She shop, the women have made up seven bolts of outing flannel, with 100 yards In each bolt, Into warm nightdresses. The great need at the present time, they stated Wednesday, Is for shirts. Shirts of any kind are wanted, as there are many men and boys In need of them. So anyone with shirts to give la asked to call the exchange or bring them In, The Jackson cou'Aty peer farm Is also supplied to some exwui W clothing and with clean rags and other materials through the erchange, which as a branch of the women's division of the Jackson County Coun cil for the Relief of the Unemployed Is cooperating in every way possible with the county In the solution of 1U problems. Contributions Made. Many visitors have been calling at the Welfare Exchange during the past few weeks and contributions, abso lutely unsolicited, have been coming In from many quarters. One of the latest checks given to help supply the shop was sent by Mrs, W. T. Orleve of Prospect, following her In spection of the exchange. Following Christmas, the exchange will continue In regular operation. Railway Labor Agrees On Pay CHICAGO, Dec. 3.
