To Illustrate the need for aid, communication from the Oregonlan was submitted by the Humane society here. Written by John Ayres of 1310 East Taylor street, the communication reads: "The Oregon Humane society needs, the aid of all of us to carry on. Let us one and all resolve to render such aid as Is within our power to alleviate the distress of our fellow man during the coming winter, at the same time being not unmindful of the hunger, cold and suffering of the unfortu nate brute creation. "Unless the stock raiser keeps the door of mercy open the unnecessary cruel suffering of his patient 'animals during the long winter months is such as cries' out to high heaven In protest against man's Inhumanity. The poor dog, especially, should re ceive more consideration than most dog owners give it. When It bowls In Its distress, far too often man's answer la a curse, a kick, a stone, yes, and the poison pill. Pets as a rule have a sorry time of it, owing to the lack of considera tion ol their master ot mistress. The pet bird Is far too often sadly ne glected. To be a really successful character player, almost sny movie wiseacre will 111 you, one has to be typed. She has portrayed women of every social rank and tempera ment, worn elaborate finery and lowly rags, and In no two pictures has she been the same character. A few years ago she might not have been so fortunate. It Isn't every player who escapes Hollywood's pen chant for typing Its puppets. Per haps this escape Is her "cashing in" on years of stage experience that runs the gamut from Shakespeare o modern comedy and drama on Broad way. Hollywood has changed In recent years, however, and that is her ex planatlon for her singular good for tune In averting the fate of most character actresses. The change that affects her career most closely Is the number of stage directors and stars in pictures now. "There are so many people out here," she explains, "who knew me on the stage, know that I have play ed so many roles, that it Isn't diffi cult to win a variety of parts." The stern, morose Aunt Hester of "Bill of Divorcement" Is In person a quiet, charming little southern wom ansavannah, Tenn., is her home town who has more of the real trouper's love of acting than can be found in an even gross of the pretty young blondes who parade themselves as movie actresses hereabouts. Leaving school, she was sent to Europe In the hope that stage am bitions would be forgotten, but she returned all the more determined. An injury to her knee postponed her active stage career for five years, during which she spent money reck lessly on treatments to the one end that she might act. "I decided then that If I couldn't. act I didn't want to live," she asys. So she acted. In small companies and large, In small towns and big cities. And she feels the same way about her work now. She kept trying and now she's headed for bigger and better pans. (By Rob h In coons.) HOLLYWOOD. () Pert little Mary Carlisle la beginning to hit an effective stride In her Cinderella march from obscurity to recognition. Without stage training, without movie experiences, she came to Holly wood with her mother from Boston, her home city, and began a saucy rapping at the doors ot casting ot ftces. Two or three years ago she had her first screen test, inspired by a lunch in a studio restaurant where she was seen by Carl Laemmle, Jr. The test never brought anything "It was too awful," says Mary. Not long after that she obtained a Job In a dancing chorus at M-G-M. It was a "break" that almost proved her undoing. "I couldn't dance a step, and I was the first of a lot of new girls to be tried out," she says. "Naturally, I wasn't so good. But I danced for a while, until someone kindly sug gested I try for a place In the studio stock company. I did, and got It." In the dancing chorus at the same time was Ann Dvorak, who hadn't been able to dance either when she began, and Ann helped Mary learn the steps. Ann's rise to fame, once It began, was swifter than Mary's has been, but Mary is pushing along, taking whatever parts and even bits she can get, and liking It. In her first film parts, Mary began stealing scenes, and recently there were those who contended she all but stole "Down to Eearth" from Will Rogers, the star. One of her first bits the young bride in the final sequence of "Grand Hotel" stood out so that she drew notices In a comparatively insignificant role. She has had featured roles in sev eral films and played inconsequen tial bits in many pictures all of them training for the day when that one Big Chance would come. Her work in the Rogers picture has brought the big chance closer, and the day u soon at hand when Mary Carlisle five feet one inch tall, 100 pounds In weight, blond hair and blue eyes will no longer be lent out for more training. For she Is conceded the material ot which stars are made.
