If the final figure hold to average the banks may not be able to put on their pressure act In December after all. SOCIALISTS. The split In the So cialist party due to the poor show ing In the election la assuming seri ous proportions. Norman Thomas and Waldman are on one aide of the fence HUlqult and hta followers on the other. Thomas la In favor of mak ing doctrlnary concessions to enlist the support of other groupa whlcft are frightened by the term Socialist. HUlqult la all for sticking to the party's guns. There la a possibility that the split may lend to the for mation of a new liberal party. The first real test will come at the mu nicipal election next year FARMERS. Financial leadens are keenly Interested In the "domestic allotment" plan to relieve the farmer. They understand that Roosevelt Is giving tt serious consideration. The plan provides a government subsidy for farmers who voluntarily agree to reduoe their acreage the subsidy to cover the difference be tween open market prices and actual cost of production Including mortgage Interest, etc. For instance, If wheat were selling at 46 cents a bushel and the coets were figured at 80 cents, the government would make up the 3ft cents to co-operating farmers. The subsidy Is supposed to be paid from taxes on the processing of wheat (In the case of wheat) such as bread, breakfast cereals, etc. Informed opin ion here doubts that such taxes could be enacted. The emotional values Involved are certain to Inter fere with, clear thinking. But It la felt that some such effort must be made to put the farm purchasing power on a parity with industrial purchasing power when the upturn shows. BEER Among the stock market securities to which beer Is expected to give a tilt are Owens Illinois Gins and General American Tank, The former will make about (3 a share this year. As prospects run, next year should show about tl.60. But If beer goes through there should be about 4 a aharo extra earned on the first year. The tank car people scrapped 3000 beer carriers after prohlbtllon came In. In the dairy trade and soft drink field they found new uses for cars and today have 5000 blg-t)me modern cars ready for the word. They can take on from 10 per cent to 20 per cent new business and have the bulk of It for the profit column. Beer will do the trick and the brewers have already made their contracts, STARTDEC.21ST Notlc has been given that the county school superintendent of Jackson county will hold the regu lar examination of applicants for atate teachers' certificates at the court house, Medford, aa follows, commencing Wednesdsy, December 31, 1933, at 9 o'clock a. m and con. ttnulng until Friday, December 33. at o clock p. m.
