Communications Oleo Tax Upheld, To the Editor: In your discussion on how to vote on the various measures on the bal lot you advised voting no on the oleomargarine tax referendum. We consider this a direct slap at the dairy industry of the Rogue River valley and the state of Oregon, as it Is the basic Industry of the state. This measure was passed by the last legislature and referred' to the voters by the oleomargarine Interests, All other Pacific northwest states hava aimli-r oleomargarine tax laws. Oleomargarine carries very little tax, the oil being Imported duty free. recent tariff on lumber was hailed with enthusiasm as a forward step toward prosperity. Why object to a foreign . product like oleomargarine being taxed. Every pound of but- terfat or quart of milk a dairyman sells carries a tax of some kind. Even the milk delivered on the streets of Medford Is taxed. Why should not oleo carry a Just amount of Oregon's taxes. Oleomargarine has been erron eously celled the "poor man's butter" because It can be sold cheap. Let the laboring man who Is buying oleo consider that every cent he spends for oleo leaves the state, while If he purchases butter he Is aiding 50,000 Oregon men and women on dairy farms. By aiding the dairyman the laborer is also Increasing the de mand for his own labor, as the sue cess of the dairy Industry is far- reaching. Butter Is a product of Oregon In dustry that pays plenty of taxes and spends It's Income right here in Ore gon. Oleo pays virtually no taxes and contributes little or nothing to any class of business In the state. Which shall It be, Mr. Editor Ore, gon or the Philippines? - Horns in dustry or eastern manufacturers? Every business In the state is de pendent on the prosperity of Oregon dairies. Morris Dunn, speaker for the day, was unable to appear so his speech, which was forwarded, was read by President Arnsplger, and list ed reasons why the Grange power bill should be defeated, placing special emphasis upon the clalma that It authorizes $65,500,000 of state bonds In addition to the present "huge state debt." The bill, It was fur ther claimed, would bankrupt Oregon, when all resources should be "saved to feed the thousands of unem ployed. ' "This added bonded indebtedness would raise taxes still higher, and more home and farm owners would lose preporty and life's savings through tax delinqnency." it was also stated In the speech. A letter from W. S. TTRen was also read by President Arnsplger, and ex pressed the same sentiment. The program today was arranged to com plete the plan of the Klwanls club to hear the affirmative and negative arguments on all measures to be voted on tomorrow. Professor 0. F.
