J TXGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1932. I L (Continued from Page One) an army of police and waving flags waa a repetition of those that be had received In rapid succession during the day at Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark and cities In between. It was topped off with a 18-mtnuut ovation that filled the great apaces of Madison Squsre Garden with a deafening din that only died down when Senator Hebert I'll., R. I.) be gan to Introduce Mrs. Theodore Roose velt, widow of the former president. who In turn presented Mr, Hoover. Before the chief executive could begin his speech, an excited man shouted down from one of the high balconies, "You're a liar." He re peated It over and over until those near blm, and a half dozen police mauled him and dragged him out of the garden. Dangers Pointed, Telling his vast audience that "this philosophy upon which the governor of New York proposes to conduct the presidency of the United State is the philosophy of stagnation, of do apalr," the president listed eight "pro posals of our opponents that will en danger or destroy our system. "This campaign," Mr. Hoover said, "la more than a contest between two men. It Is more than a contest be tween two parties. It Is a contest between two philosophies of govern ment. "We are told by the opposition that we must have a change, that we must have a new deal. It Is not the change that comes from normal development or nstionai life to which I object, but the proposal to alter the whole foundations of our national life, which have been bullded through generations of testing and struggle, and of the principles upon which we nave minded the nation." Stoma study Record. Mr. Hoover, said In considering what the Democrats are proposing, "we must go deeper than platitudes and emotional appeals of tha public platform In the campaign" and study ineir records ana loon into the type 01 leaders campaigning for the Demo, cratlo ticket. Referring to the latter, the ohlef executive said, "I can respect the sin cerity 01 these men In their desire to Changs our form of government ana our social and economic system, though I shall do my best tonight to prove they are wrong." The crowd booed, as the president added: "I refer particularly to Senator Norrls, Senator La Pollette, Senator Cutting, Senator Huey Long, Senator Wheeler, William R. Hoarot, and other exponent of a aoelsl philosophy different from the traditional Ameri can one." r' Res Help From Democrats. Unless these men feel assurance of support to their Ideas." he continued, "they certainly would not be sup porting these candidates and the Dnnocratlc party. The real of the,-v men Indicate that they have sure confidence that they will have voice In the administration of our govern ment." Continuing, the president said the change proposed by the "Democratic principals and allies are of the moat profound and penetrating character.' "Let us pause for a moment and examine the American system of govP eminent, of social and economlo life which It Is now proposed that we should alter," he added. "Our system la the product of our race and of our experience In building a nation to heights unparalleled In the whole history of the world. j Unique System. "It Is a system peculiar to the American people. It differs essen tially from all others In the world. It 1 an American system. It Is founded on the conception that only through ordered liberty, through freedom to the Individual, and equal opportunity to the Individual will his Initiative and enterprise be sum' moned to spur the march of progress. "Questions often arise wbether de mocracy can remain master In It own house, can preserve the funda mentals of our American system. 1 contend that It can, and I contend that this American system of ours has demonstrated It validity and su periority over sny system yet In vented by human mind. It has dem onstrated It in the face of the great est teat of our history, that Is the emergency which we have laced In the past three years. Value Is Proved. "In spite of all these obstructions we did succeed. Our form of gov ernment did prove Itself equal to the task. We saved this nstlon from a quarter of a century of chaos and degeneration, and we preserved the savings, the Insurance policies gave a fighting chance to men to hold their homee. We Installed measures which today are bringing beck re covery. A million men have found Jobs. 'I therefore contend that the prob lem of today Is to continue .these measures and policies to restore the American system to Its normal func tioning, to repair the wounds It has received, to correct the weaknesses snd evils which would defeat that system. "To enter upon a series of deep changes to embark upon this In In choste new deal which has been pro pounded In this campaign would be to undertake to undermine and de stroy our American system. 80 Years Improvement. Reviewing Improvement In Ameri can life during the last generation, the president then said: "This 30 years of Incomparable Im provement In the scale of living, the advance of comfort and Intellectual life. Inspiration, and Ideals did not arise without right principles ani mating the American system which produced them. Shall this system be discarded because vote-seeking men appeal to distress and say that the machinery la all wrong and that It must be abandoned? Should not our purpose be to restore the normal working of that system which has brought us such Immeasurable bene fits, and not destroy It?" Cries of "No" greeted the president as he naked If the system should be discarded. L WEDD! HELD ASSURED STOCKHOLM. Nov, 1 -(API- Stockholm newspapers openly dis cussed rumors today that the en gagement of Princess Ingrld to Prlnje Oeorge or tfte Prince of Wales will be announced In London on No vember 11. The newspapers added' that the an nouncement might be made at a dinner In the British capital cele brating the 90th anniversary of the birthday of the princess' father. The presence of the princess In London for a visit with her royal rel ative there, as well as the recent visit to Sweden of the two British princes, lent aest . to the . reports, however. The fact that Prince Oeorge was always found at Princess Ingrld side In Sweden recently msde his name more prominent than hla el der brother', the heir to the throne. Broken windows etesed be Trow. Mr. Harrlman. president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, who he recently proclaimed a plan for the restoration of agriculture, not unlike my own. President Hoover does not favor a program of that kind. He has closed tha door of hope to American agriculture, and when he did that he closed the door of hope to you also. For Immigration Curb. "R says proudly that he has ef fectively restricted Immigration in order to protect American labor. I favor that, but I might add that m the enforcement of Immigration laws serious abuses have been revealed. "But he does not tell you that by permitting agriculture to fall Into ruin millions of workers from the farm hsvs crowded into our cities. These men have added to unemploy ment. They are here because agri culture Is prostrated. A restored agriculture will check this migration. It will keep these farmers happily at home. It will leave more Job for you. It will provide a market for your products. That 1 the key U national economic restoration. Hoover Cant Cooperate. One more word. I have spoken of getting things done. Now the way to get things done under our form of government 1 through Joint ac tion by the President and the con gress. The two branches of govern ment must cooperate. This Is neces sary under our constitution, and I believe In our constitutional govern ment.. "President Hoover oannot get ac tion from the congress. He seems unable to cooperate. He quarreled with a Republican congress snd hs quarreled with a half Republican Congress. He will quarrel with sny kind of congress. He cannot get tninga done. "This is something you must con sider. The next congress will cer tainly be Democratic. I look forward to cooperation with It." "Then Dignity Died." A few minutes after Mr. Hoover finished speaking last night In New York city, the Democratic presiden tial candidate said, "At first the President refused to recognize thst ne wss In a contest, but as the peo ple have responded to out program witn enthusiasm he recognized that we were both candidate." "And then." Mr. Roosevelt added, 'dignity died. At Indianapolis ha spoke of my argument misquoting tnem. But at jnaianapoiis ne went further. He abandoned arguments ror personalities." Wot. 1 (AP) The Republican national committee said today that statements by Democratic Chairman James A. Farley "Indicate that he is adept at practicing the ancient political adage: Never let the right hand know what the left band la doing." In a formal statement, the Bepub Ucan committee added: "In brandishing aa a forgery a let ter bearing hi signature received by a Canadian shipping man asking him for a contribution to the Democratic campaign fund. Mr. Farley made this public statement: " 'We have never solicited contribu tion from anyone, Canadian or American.' "Scarcely had this statement been Issued before Henry W. Leeds, presi dent of the Chalfront-Haddon RaU Hotel at Atlantic City, turned over to Ambassador Walter Edge a telegram signed by Mr. Farley asking for funds for the Democratic campaign. . . . "Did someone In the Democratic headquarters also forge Mr. Farley's name to this telegram? "Disclosure by the Republican na tional committee of the method be ing used by the Democratic national organisation In an effort to obtain campaign funds brought a very much more discreet statement from Mr. Frley than that with which be char acterized the disclosure of his letter to a Canadian shipping man. Bs did seek to throw some doubt on the authenticity of letter from A. P. Homer ' of Democratic finance com mittee, to O. A. Eddy, president of the Ooss Pdlntlng Press company. Chicago, but said that if It were writ ten 'It arouses me to condemn It.' "Mr. Fsrlrr know that such a lat ter was written a doe 'Governor Roosevelt. , . . "Of course. It Is a (set, naturally weU known to Mr. Farley, that Mr, Homer la an Intimate friend of Gov ernor Roosevelt and ha been sine the days ot the world war whan the governor was assistant secretary of the navy and Mr. Homer was In Washington securing contract from the navy for business firms." Communications Wants a Meeting To the Editor: For the past two years there ha been a hue and cry among the tax paying citizen that taxes simply must be lowered; right now we sre having meetings of city and county budget committees composed of as fine a bunch of citizens a we have, most of them personal friend of mine and some of whom I have talk ed tax reduction with and still It seems as tho no relief will be had. The idea that the base of taxation must not be lowered Is so firmly fixed In some people' minds that they cannot see any other Idea. Now I know that most everyone knows that taxes absolutely must be reduced and right now while most ot us are marking time waiting for economlo conditions to right them selves Is a good time for us taxpayers to tackle the Job, w will only go on in this same old way, year after year, and It Is really a taxpayers Job a we are the one most vitally Inter ested. We have the privilege, of course. of protesting the budget when the proper time comes, but no one hs any intention of psylng any attention to ua as Individuals, we would only be yelled down and laughed at. I have a perfectly safe, sensible, business-like plan that will work out, but It Is a taxpayers' job and will require an organization of the tax payers to put it over, and as there 1 VICKS COUGH DROP ...
