The drive will open up with an
elpht o'clock breakfast on Wednes
day morning at the Hotel Medford.
It la hoped that the entire amount
necessary will be raised on Wednes
day and Thursday for these two
character-bulldlnt; agencies.
Since the city and county have
pledged themselves to handle the un
employment and charity budget, It
should not be a large task or burden
on either workers or glvera to clean
up within the two days specified.
Both budgets have been voluntar
ily reduced and salaries cut upwards
of 35 per cent. The enrollment of
both organizations la greater today
than any tlm ince organ last Ion. The
headquarters of both organlaztlona
will be In the building at 500 East
Main atreet, furnished by the city.
The budget accepted for 1933 la
70 per cent of the budgota formerly
raised for scouting In the city of
Medford. Scout Executive Mr. Hoov
er not only serves the city of Med
ford, but four counties In southern
Oregon, and additional sums which
help to take care of salary and travel
Items are secured from other com
munities served.
The cost of scouting for both boys
and girls In the city of Medford ranka
among the loweat of any city in the
country.

Orange at the all-day meeting, held
at the Central Point Orange hall.

The Central Point Grange met In
regular session Friday night at 8:00
o'clock. Before taking up the reg
ular business the meeting was called
to order and listened to a short talk
from T. I. Deck on the freight truck
and bus bill which Is on the Nov
ember ballot.
Mr. Deck gave a short history of
this bill bringing out ths fact that
the bill first came out known aa the
highway protective bill but on orders
of the state supreme court the name
waa changed to the freight truck
and bus bill because there was no
protection of the highway offered by
this bill. Figures were given on the
taxes paid by the trucks showing
that for the year July 1, 1931 to June
30, inaa, trucks paid a total tax to
the state of Oregon of $3. 175,522.07.
This was compared with the total
taxes paid by railroads In Oregon
In 1030 Of 13,063,876.00 or 811,646.07
Jess than the taxes paid by trucks.
The service given by trucks was
also stressed by the speaker. Espeo
lal mention was made of "pick up
and store delivery." which was orig
inated by the trucks, and also of the
leas time In transit offered.
In closing Mr. Deck pointed out
that the trucks employ 25,000 em
ployes with dependents of at least
75.000 and have an annual payroll
of 830,000,000.00 In Oregon.

Falls potato Industry was described
by F. L. Ballard, county agent leajr
at Oregon State college, who epokft
also of the work of development else
where In the state. Arthur J. Farm
er, manager of the maritime com
merce department of the Portland
chamber of commerce, told of thei
foreign -markets for Oregon potatoea,
particularly In the Orient.

single electric bulb Is envisioned by
Dr. Alexander Silverman, professor
of chemistry at the University ot
Pittsburgh.
Addressing an American Chemical
society meeting here, he said he be
lieved sometime In the near future)
"we may be able to transmit light
from a single bulb by means of trans
parent quarts rods."
Such rods, he said, "are excep
tionally fine carriers of light and arc
luminous only at the ends.
Thus, the professor pointed out,
the rods might be extended from ont
bulb to all rooms In s house.
