MEDTOTtD "NfATTi TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRrDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1932 G. 0. P. BIG PUSH E PXGE TWELVE Chieftains Meant What They Said After Maine Went Democratic Heavy Can nonading On All Fronts By HF-OHERT PLWIMFR WASHINGTON There can b no doubting that the republican chlef tatns meant what they said when, after Maine vent democratlo In Ita ataM election", the word went out that a more lntenallled campaign for President Hoover's reelection would be waged. The first of October saw heavy can nonading all atong the O. O. P. front Republican big guna were leaving no sector untouched. President Hoover sped to Dos Moines to make the flrat of his cam paign addresses. Vice-President Cur tis dipped Into the south In the so-called border states, then pushed on for an extensive visit through the west. Ogden Mills, secretary of the treasury and one of the President's foremost political advisers, was on the road for a trip that will carry him to the Paclflo coast and back. The youthful Patrick J. Hurley, secretary of war and another of the eablneteers who advises the Presi dent on political msttvra, was pre paring for a whlrlwln plane tour of Oklahoma which called for nine speeches In only two days. Tireless Pat Hurley Small wonder that Everett Ban ders, chairman of the republican na tional committee, could chuckle at campaign headquartera and announce trulmphantly: ", . . The 1932 campaign, both In organization work and In carrying the party message to thu voters, la further advanced than at the aame stage of any presidential contest I can remember. The pace being set by Hurley per baps Is the most striking example of the republican big push. Hurley's ability to cover territory la uncanny. Almost dally one reads of his ap pearance before this or that repub lican rally always in a different city, sometimes in a different section of ttie country. , Already he has won the name of "Pat, the tireless." Nine Talks In Two Days Hit attempt to stump his home tat of Oklahoma, making nine speeches In two days, la Illustrative of his oapaclty. Five speeches the first day and four the second are a rather large order for any man. , Oosslp has It that Hurley thought so. too. But with a plane ne decided that he might be able to make It after all. Perhaps another reason prompted Hurley to make the effort He has the reputation earned at the very beginning of the political open sea sonof being the republicans' No. 1 "oheer leader." The democrats have had a lot of tun "kidding" him about tela Maybe the Hon. Pat wants to show the home folks a few things. L At the regular weekly meeting of the Med ford Elks lodge held last night, plans were perfected for. two coming events on the Elks calendar that promise to be exceptionally pop ular In fraternal circles. The first dance of the fall season will be held on Monday evening, October 81st and will be open to all Elka and Invited guests. The second event of Interest to Elks Is the election night party planned for Tuesday evening, Novem ber 8th which all active and un affll'ited Elka are urged to attend. Hot election news will be received via radio and telegraph and loads of entertainment Is being arranged by B. O. "Jerry" Jerome. In addition It Is planned to have a banquet starting at 6:30 with tentative plans calling for a venison dinner to be prepared by P. O. Blgham and his committee that has functioned so well In the psst. A feature of the evening will be a apeech by Floyd B. Thompson, grand exalted ruler, which will be reproduced from a special phonograph record made es pecially for this occsslon. A resolution was adopted to help out a special re-lnstatement campaign whereby for the time until April 1st. 10S3 Elks whose membership has lapsed may be re-Instated by paying only a ta.oo fee and their dues for the current period. This plan Is ex pected to result In at least a hun dred reinstatements and a ltrge com mittee will be named lo handle the details of this reinstatement cam paign. Memorial service was held for Olen rubric with W. A. Oatea giving a very fine t!k on the active and In structive life of brother rabrlck.
