From the verandah where he aat alone In the blue August dusk, he eould aee dim ahapea of girls escaping with their eacorta. In the rose-garden below the terrace, englnea began to sputter. With grop ing headlights automobiles shot out, gathered apeed and vanished. He could guesa tbelr errands. In Imagination he followed them. A, girl and a man who had not known each other till within the paat tew hours, met accidentally on the bathing-beach or golf-course, had taken a momentary ahlne to Santa." Then had come the cabled news that ahe was returning and an invitation, amounting to a com mand, that he ahould apend the first week-end at her parents' country-house. , He wired her his challenge In mid-ocean. "Delighted you've finished sam pling." Injured silence had followed. Were he to aue for reinstatement. he would become her dog-Fido. In a desperate mood of hesitancy the day she had landed he had driven to Cape Cod, there to spend bla two weeks' vacation. How long could he stand the sus pense? That was the question. Memories tender, absurd, entranc ing were undermining bis resolu tion. T'ue first time he had kissed her. She had been sixteen and be twenty. Tbe difference in age bad made blm ashamed of bla cradle- snatching. The temptation had occurred as he was escoi ling her from a Christ mas part? Suddenly he had baited '.hs car and scarcely knowing what he was doing, had caught ber to blm. -"'a bad expected her to shrink from nim. Instead, pressing cleser, he had murmured, "0, lovely!" That waa Santa. She perauaded every man that be was her one and only. Cllve was emerging from his corner when ball-hop accosted him. tech other. Tomorrow they would be paired differently. What did they gain by experi menting? When tbe real thing ar rived, it would find them with blunt ed appetites. On tbe other hand there waa the bird In the hand theory. One might aleep through life aavlng up tor a great event that lever happened. Suddenly he canght a glimpse it himself. Could Santa, see him tow, how ahe would laugh I "Cllve, darling, you are a dumb bell." Because he was aavlng himself tor her, he was acting like a monk. Bhe wouldn't thank him tor his loyalty; ahe would treat it as an Infirmity. "Time enough tor that when you're married," ahe would tell him'. Her name apelt magic; she was aptly called. Her face waa Instinct with longing, yet longing that waa Impersonal. Her dark bobbed head waa boyish; her haiel eyes melting. She had a trick ot meekness, very appealing, In the way she employed her capable hands. She created the Impression ot noedlng protection. It waa out ot the question that any girl should live up to her ap pearance. She didn't attempt to; he was outrageously modern. Wel coming all and sundry with gay Im partiality, she led them as a flock beside the still waters ot her gentle ness In the pathetlo belief that she could restore their souls. Cllve's soul waa an example ot her restor ing. Since her mother had whisked her off to Europe, bla days had been a protracted torment On shipboard, In a train, through a chance meet ing at aome hotel aha might pick up a more eligible Apollo. Every detail ot her conduct and attire would be planned to advertlae that she" was accessible. Each time the plcklng-up process had been ac complished her mother, having shed an aroma of respectability, would discreetly vanish. The correctness of Cllve's prophe cy had been reflected In ber corre spondence, which had conslated In the main ot picture-postcards signed hurriedly, "With all my heart- He was emerging from bis cornel when a bell-bop accosted blm, "A telegram. Been paging yoi everywhere." Cllve's heart beat in bis throat He slit tbe envelope: "Must see you. Important Santa." Springing to action, be rushed Into tbe hotel. At the desk ha learned that by the earliest train he couldn't reach New York much before tbe next evening. His short est means of travel waa to drive, as be had come, by automobile. From being old and done (old and done at 22!) he had Joined the ranks ot the young and gallant Ho caat about for parallels to the grandeur ot his passion. His choice fastened on Gaston de Folx, the greatest general in Renalssanco Europe, dead and burled at twenty three, his fame accomplished, who at the siege of some Italian town (waa It Brescia?) when walls w6re slippery with blood and men were faltering, had bound bis right arm to his aide with his lady'a acart and led the assault carrying his sword In his lott hand to prove 0, splendid example! how Invincible youth Is when it has been enslaved by a woman. Santa'a genlua for extracting pro posals was forgotten, together with the many times when she had al most engaged herself to other chumps. For the past week he had been analyzing with elderly clearness the phenomenon ot Infatuation: how a man could be such an asa as to get that way, to at,.y that way and. Infinitely more complicated, why It waa that when his dreams bad been realised, be frequently and dis astrously recovered. Under the spell of speed and moonlight auch enqulrlea lookod thin blooded. Santa's telegram could have but one Interpretation. And so he drove through the night tearing the silence of de serted country roads Into shreds, desecrating with his motor's high whine little New England Tillages. , He waa apeedlng to answer San ta'a call!
