(P) Quiet was rMtored today at Ports mouth penitentiary, on the shore of Lake Ontario near here, where troop were called last night to quell a riot of the 90S prlaonera in the Institu tion. The riot, in the course of which the prlaonera threatened to set fire to the prison buildings, waa reported to have begun over a de mand by the men for elgaret papera, more togaoco and longer recreation perloda. Two of the prlaonera were Injured. The c Idlers fired several Tolleya. They finally withdrew after the prla onera threatened to burn down the buildings, Including thoae In which they had barricaded themselves. If the troops remained. FroTWmly. the prlaonera had cap tured acting Warden Ollbert Smith and held him for a brief period When he entered the building In which they were fortified, to attempt to persuade them to quiet down. The last of them were finally per suaded to abandon the attempt by another prison official, whose name waa withheld. While the GOO-cdd men screamed within their stronghold, a hug crowd outelde the prlaon waa kept a quar ter of a mile away by police. The riot began at noon and lasted until sundown. Persona In the crowd aald aomewhere between 30 and 100 ahota were fired after the troopa arrived. First report of the causa of the outbreak said the prisoners had be come enraged when one of their num ber, working on a quarry gang out side the walls, was caught In an attempt to escape. This story said the other members of the quarry crew then refused to work and wore taken back to the prison, where they balked at being led at midday Into the cell block. Persons who claimed to know, said the trouble started about 8:80 p. m., In the tailor shop. The prisoners, they said, rushed to the doors leading Into the central passages of the pris on and blocked them with large atones. Acting Warden Smith forced his way In and his detention fol lowed. These young ladlea are from Oresham county, Oregon, and com peted against 38 other teams at the state fair. They will represent Ore gon at the Pacific International ex position or Camp Plummer contest, presenting a sewing demonstration. Miss Helen Clark waa winner of the atate style show, modeling garments which she made In club work. Headquarters for these young peo ple will be at Camp Plummer on the exposition grounds.
