(By Robert. Ward Behb.) With the Civic Music campaign In full progress, It might be well to again remind those who think they "cannot afford to Join," of the many beneficial reasons why they should become members, particularly this year. Music, as we all know, properly administered, stimulates faith, en ergy and action. Down through all the ages, it has been used Innumer able times to combat melancholy, gloom and despair. As David ministered to Saul, as Farinelll ministered to King Philip V of Spain, so the musicians of America are now devoting their best efforts In the apprlcatlon of muslo to the great practical problems of the day. Farlnelli, the famous singer, re ceived the fantastic annual salary of 50,000 francs In 1736 (about tl00. 000 in 1932 money values) for curing the mental depression or King Philip of Spain. The king had not smiled for years, but the beauty of Farl nelll'e famous voice turned his gloom to cheer, which resulted in the sav ing of his. kingdom. The late bandmaster, Lieut-Commander Philip Souaa, once remarked: "They say that music Is a luxury. It Is to anyone without a soul. Music Is of no use to a chimpanzee. Music Inspires, enriches and ennobles. It revives the soul. Surely, anything that does that Is a necessity and not a luxury.' Music can do something to men and women which will straighten up their weakened vertebrae and stimu late their faltering hearts. At the present time, Carnegie hall of New York city Is offering free midday recitals on Its magnificent organ. The purpose is to bring re laxation and Inspiration Into the lives of the Jaded business man and wom an. Likewise will be the reaction derived from these excellent con cert promised us by the Civic Music asoclation. In these reconstruction days, can we possibly spend too much In us ing money to c lapel the fear which player such tragic role In our recent depression? Money Invested In music ts one oi the wisest expenditures we can make. If prosperity Is the fruit of educa tion, music is the sunshine of prosperity.
