H. Q. Starkweather, Democratic
candidate for congress from this
district, will apeak In Meaford next
Monday, it waa announced today by
prank DeSouza, chairman of the
Jackaon Democratic county central
committee. He will speak Monday in
this city and continue to Ashland,
land Tuesday, where he will speak In
the evening under the auspices of
the City Democratic committee. A
rally will be held in the armory of
the neighboring city and elaborate
plans are being made for the enter
tainment of the Democratic nominee,
Monday noon a luncheon, honor
ing Mr. Starkweather, will be held at
the Hotel Holland in this city and
all Democratic county committee
men, candidates and all other mem
bers of the party are especially In
vited. Carl O. Donau&h, chairman, of the
state Democratic committee, will also
be present to confer with local Demo
crats. He will be accompanied by
Vernon Wlllams, finance director of
the state committee. Other Demo
cratic candidates are expected.
Attorney DeSouza also announced
today that he has appointed an ex
ecutive committee to head the cam
paign In the county. It la com
posed of W. H. Canon, J. H. Puller of
Ashland, J. P. Wortman, A.. E.
Reames and Ralph G Jennings.

, CIVIC MUSIC HEAD
SPEAKS TO LIONS
The purposes of the Southern Ore
gon Civic Music association were out
lined today by Arthur W. Manuel,
Pacific coast manager ot tne Civic
Concert Service, at the noon lunch
eon of the Lions club at the Hotel
Holland. .
The association will bring to Med-
ford this season, he assured the Lions
three and possibly four concerts.
Mrs. Donald Clark appeared before
the club to ask all members to buy
their tickets to the Fox Cratertan
theater at the Rex Cafe this week, in
order that the women's division of
the county relief council may obtain
35 per cent of the profits to be usea
in relief work. Tickets bought at the
box office will not benefit the relief
movement.
Mr. Cary of San Rafael, Cal., was a
guest of the club and gave an inter
esting account of the pleasant re
actions to his visit here, the first one
In many years. He listed Medford as
one of the most desirable places ne
has ever known.
Missionary Conference
Scheduled for Friday.
Members of Home and Foreign Mis- :
sionary societies of the Cascade dis
trict of the Methodist church are
looking for ward to the conference
to be held here Friday, October ?.
at the Methodist Episcopal church.
The all-day meeting wilt be sup
plemented by a tea at the home of
Miss Helen Carlton, president of the
Home Missionary society, who la in
viting the guesta to her home on
the Old Stage road for 4:30 o'clock.
Mrs. A. J. Geddes of Roseburg, presi
dent for this district of the Women's
Foreign Missionary society, will as
sist Miss Carlton as hostess.
The conference at the local church
will open at 9:30 o'clock and the
morning session will be devoted to
the foreign missions.
Luncheon will be served at 12 and
the afternoon meeting will be di
vided between the two societies.
Numerous speakers of ability and
wide experience will be heard on the
day's program. The list Includes Ruth
Field of India, Miss Mary Young of
Korea, Mrs. Edwards, conference
worker of the foreign sQciety; Mrs. R.
L. Reed, Portland, of the Home so
ciety, Mrs. D. J. Maple and Miss
Keech, superintendent of the Manley
center, and Mrs, J. J. Oerder, who will
speak on Alaska.
Supper and an evening session win
be held at the church.

Guest at Bridge Tarty
Feting Mrs. Ooodwln Humphreys
on the occasion of her birUiday, Mrs,
F. G. Bunch entertained with a love
ly bridge party and handkerchief
shower last evening at her home on
the Jacksonville road. Rooms were
decorated in autumn flowers from
Mrs. Bunch's gardens, which are fill
ed with many choice blossoms this
year.
Bridge was enjoyed during the
evening, with five tables in play, and
prizes were awarded Mrs. Belva Aiken,
Mrs. Cole Holmes, Mrs. Roy Watson
and Mrs. W. A. Holloway.
A guest prize was also presented
the honor guest.
Eastern Star Dance
On Tonight's Calendar.
A gala event on this evening's cal
endar is the dancing party announced
by Reames Chapter No. 66, Order of
Eastern Star. Cards will be played
in addition to dancing and a large
attendance of Reames chapter mem
bers, Masons and their invited guests
is expected.
The affair will be the first of a
series planned for the winter social
season, and very special plans are
being completed to assure Its suc
cess.

are Included in a separate division
with $98,000 in prizes.
This Majestic contest Is actually
one of the most simple affairs ever

Civic Music Holds I
Society's Attention
Bridge, luncheon and tea tables are
rather deserted these days as mem
bers of the leading social groups con
centrate their effort m the enroll
ment campaign of the Southern Ore
gon Civic Music association. Enroll
ment week opened Monday night at
large banquet at the Hotel Med
ford and will continue until Satur
day night. And, during the interim,
all who love music and all who wish
to bring good music into the Uvea
of many others are devoting their
days to advancement of the associa
tion's second year In Medford.
The larger the membership this
year, the more excellent will be the
concerts obtained for the season.
With this reward as incentive the
workers are giving all possible time
to acquainting those not familiar
with civic music with the import
ance of the association to southern
Oregon,
Building Bridge Club
Meets, Parish Hall.
The meeting of the Building Bridge
club will be held at Parish hall to
morrow Instead of at the T. E. Dan
iels home, a previously announced,
Mrs, Rose Schleffeltn and Mrs A.

visitor here yesterday as guest of Dr.
and Mrs. F. Q. Bunch, at their home
on the Jacksonville road.

Garden Club Opens
New Year Tomorrow
The first meeting of the fall sea
son and the first meeting in the new
county court house will be Jield to
morrow evening by the Medford Gar
den club at 7:30 o'clock.
The session will be held In the
auditorium of the new court house
and a feature of the evening will be
the operation of a new plant ex
change. Discussion of important bus
iness matters will be led by Mrs. A.
E. Reames, president.
College Women Meet
Saturday Afternoon
The College Women's club will
meet Saturday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock at the home of Mrs. Porter J,
Neff. Miss Annette Gray will review
"Limit" and "Renewal", by Kipling.
The hostess will be assisted by Miss
Sara Van Meter, A pleasant after
noon is expected and all members are
urged to attend.
Talisman Temple
To Meet Wednesday
The regular meeting of Talisman
Temple No. 40 will meet in the K. P.
hall tonight for the last session to
be held prior to the grand temple
session In Portland. A large attend
ance Is especially requested In view

WOMEN MEETING
TO CONSIDER BILL
Tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 a'clock
Medford women will gather at the
Hotel Holland to discuss arguments
opposing passage of the Zom-Mac-Pherson
bill, It was announced to
day by John Fuller of Ashland, who
will meet with the women and have
charge of the session.
A group of Ashland women who
have been carrying on an extensive
battle against the school merger
measure will journey to Medford to
confer with the local ladles Inter
ested in retaining the Southern Ore
gon Normal school at Ashdand, In
stead of converting It into a junior
college.
Within the next few days Mr. Ful
ler will leave on & tour from Lake
view to Marshfleld, covering the
southern Oregon district, carrying the
message of opposition to the pro
posed measure and pointing out the
additional expense of the proposed
system.

WITH TRICHINOSIS
Suffering from trichinosis, a dis
ease caused by eating pork or chick
en, Dr. A. E. Dodson, well known
local physician, Is In the Sacred
Heart hospital. He became 111 last
Thursday and diagnosis, made by
Dr, E. W, Durno, he stated today,
showed the affliction as trichinosis.
The disease is caused by trlchlnella
spiralis larvae, existing In the meat,
It is characterized by Intestinal dis
orders and severe muscular pain.'
Dr. Dodson was in a slightly Im
proved condition this afternoon.

Ashland Bank To
Dispose Of Bonds
An order granting the Citizens Bank
of Ashland the right to sell 3000 bonds
of the Pacific Gas and Electric com
pany, and 3000 bonds of the Eugene
Municipal Light and Power company
was signed yesterday In circuit court,
as a step in the liquidation of the
frozen assets of the institution. The
bonds are sought by Portland broker
age house, and the request to sell was
filed by the state bank department.
