W. & T. U. SESSION
POLITICAL TINGE
(ny Sirs. Ida Wilson)
The W. C. T. U. of Jackson county
held their annual convention In the
M. E. church of Ashlsnd on Friday,
Sept. 18. After an Inspiring devo
tional service by Mrs. Van Tassen of
Ashland, President Mrs. Minnie Heine
of Medford, called the convention to
order.
Mrs. Russel wsa presented as a pio
neer member of the Ashland union
and It was explained that the splen
did floral decorations had been
brought In her honor as well as the
convention.
After a number of business Items
hsd been disposed of and the session
hsd been closed with prayer by Mrs.
E. M. Long of Medford the convention
adjourned to a bounteous repast.
Word hod come of the passing away
of Mrs. Amelia M. Slgllnger, a falthrul
member of the Medford union and a
memorial service was conducted by
Mrs. Belle Llttrel of Medford as aha
opened the afternoon session with de
votions. The Invited speakers of the conven
tion were Rev. J. E. Bates, district
supsrlntendent for the Paclflo north
west of Naiarene church. Mr. Bates
knows the cosst up to Vancouver, B.
0., and Is a keen observer of condi
tions. He based hi remarks on what
he hod seen of the failure of Cana
dian system of government control by
liquor and the comparative success
of the 18th Amendment in the U. S.
A. Mr. Bates is from Texss and the
effect that Candidate Garner has al
ready had on his state as evidenced
by late occurrences is not encourag
ing to lovers of law enforcement.
He was fallowed by Rev. E. A.
Oldenburg of Medford who empha
sised the need of a return to the
spirit of the Crusaders. Widespread
falsehood about the Canadian success
and the U. 8. failure are the founda
tion for this year's political activltlss.
The lsrgest Vote since women got the
franchise was cast In 1038. It was 40
percent of a possible hundred. . The
wet forces poll every possible Tote.
Give us but 80 percent of America's
enfranchised voters and the nation
will be dry forever. "Get out the
vote," the song that followed led by
Mrs. Rill of Medford, late of Idaho
was fitting Indeed.
During the speaker's appeal for more
strenuous activity, Pres. Relne held
up a gold pin In form of a hatchet.
She had bought It of Carry Nation.
The speaker too hod such a pin and
on question about six more were pro
duced by the audience. It was agreed
that something of that old spirit wsa
the call of the hour.
Candidates for the fall election were
then presented. Mr. Wm. Brlggs, can
didate for district attorney was fol
lowed by H. A. Autrey, candidate for
county treasurer. These were follow
ed by I,. A. Roberta. S. A. Peters, Jr.,
John R. Pettlnger and Oeo. Andrews,
all candidates for Justice of the pesos
for Ashland. It was a fine quartette
of "How Dry I Am." They proved
their sincerity by each becoming an
honorary member of the Ashland
Union and each buying an enameled
W. C. T. U. pm for his wife.
After a duet: "The Line Shall Hot
Be Broken." sung by the Misses Char-
lee and Bower of Ashland a hand-
clasped circle around the auditorium
was formed and all sang: "God Be
With you till we meet tgsln." A pray
er by Rev. Oldenburg closed a moot
Inspiring convention.
