PAGE THREE L SALE 10 START SATURDAY With a greater supply of quality merchandise on hand than on any previous year, the annual Candle Light aale of the Jackson County Humane society will open tomorrow morning at 8:30 o'clock In the Main (I tree t shop, formerly occupied by Bradflsh'a jewelry store. Committees In charge of the sale vere busy today arranging the un usual offering of clothing, linens and household furnishings included In the sale list. While prices are lower to corres pond with depression purses, the merchandise Is of high quality and more varied than at any previous sales of the society. All things Included In the sale have been dry cleaned or washed and are ready to be taken Into the home, or worn. Lamps, vases, rugs, china, ac cessories for kitchen and bath, as well as a wealth of clothing for men, women and children are Included In the sale of merchandise. In the women's department are found hats, shoes, wool, silk and chif fon dresses and lingerie. Sports attire for men Is expected to sell soon after the doors open tomorrow morning as the knickers offered would be an asset to any golf game. There are linens and fancy tweeds Included and numerous suits. Each year the Candle Light aale of the Humane society la anticipated by residents from all sections of the valley aa clothing and household fur nishings are donated from the best homes. Quality materials for make overs for children and many garments In the prevailing atylea are always available. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase feed for animals, upon which numerous families of the val ley are dependent for milk supplies Chickens, which also add their bit to family larders, otherwise quite empty, will be fed from funds realized from the sale. - The doom will open at 8:30 to morrow morning and will remain open until the merchandise has been sold. Mrs. L Williamson . Detained in North Owing to the serious Illness of Miss Louise Williamson, tr. and Mrs. Lloyd Williamson will be de tained in Salem for several days. In stead of opening kindergarten on Monday trie 10th. Mrs. Williamson plans to be ready for work on Wed nesday, the 31st. Unless other com plications arise, Mrs. Williamson will be at home Monday and Tuesday and will be glad to answer questions or register pupils for the two days preceding the opening of school. Chil dren from the age of three to six years are eligible for enrollment. Transportation may be arranged and special music Is offered. Roose velt, democratic presidential candi date, continued his trip through the west today after having told 110 lead ing Colorado democrats In Denver last night: "When we take over the con trol of the legislative snd executive branches of the national government next March we shsll have the oppor tunity to revise the executive branch of the government along lines sound er, less extravagant and designed for the greater good of the greater num ber." The New York governor In an ex temporaneous speech at a dinner at the Brown Palace hotel In Denver, said the government of New York state during 13 of the last 14 years had been In the hands of the demo crats "because under the leadership of Alfred E. Smith In the first In stance Its government was for tho welfare of the average citizen." "The Democratic party," said Roose velt, "has had in the past to appeal to voters with caliber and not dol lars. That's true this time. We are about to enter a new period of liber alism In the United States. People have been going back In these last three years Into fundamentals and are giving serious thought to the form of our government. "If our representative form of gov ernment Is to live. It must be based on an Intelligent vote. A continua tion of representative government along the lines laid down by the orig inal founders is the only thing that will keep It going. Otherwise we shsll come to some other form of govern ment. "If we get the young liberals In this campaign we are going to keep them for a generation. "The seeds have been sown. Go through and reap the crop and. be lieve me, the price will be greater $han that which Is now being re ceived for farm products." The democratic nominee said he felt "very confident of the result this fall." "I have been running for public office, or In politics, for a long time," he added, "and I have got beyond the stage of going out and claiming everything in sight. (AP) Production by mills reporting to the Western Pine association for the week ending September 10 decreased 3.597.000 feet and ahlpmenta dropped 0.635.000 feet compared with the pre ceding week, the association reported today. Production for the week waa 29, 187,000 feet, shipments 32 999.000 feet, snd orders 39.374.000 feet. Unfilled orders Increased 6.37S.O0O feet. Current new business decreased 7.835.000 feet, or 16.5 per cent, from the preceding week. The 89 mills operating during tha week average 34 per cent of capacity. The other 61 mills were down.
