forest guard for the Rogue River na
tional forest, stationed at Rogue Riv
er, was in Medford today to see his
doctor. Mr. Moore broke his back last
June, and Is now getting around on
crutches.

two weeks vacation in Medford as
the guest of her brother and sister

cap, understood to be representing
the army, has been soliciting funds in
the Medford residential districts. The

To Close Lodge The young women
who have been employed at Crater
Lake during the summer season, will
leave the lake Sunday, and all of the
employes from the lodge will leave
the park by Sept. 20, according to in
formation from the lake. The official
season at the lake closes next Tues

Ehmke Leaves W. T. Ehmke, lo
cal manager of the General Petrole
um Corp., left by train last evening
for Portland, where he will remain
two or three days, attending a man
agers conference. Mr. Ehmke stated
that a number of Improvements are
being made at the local plant. In
cluding the erection of & new load
ing rack. Two or three pipe fitters
from Portland are expected at the lo
cal plant tn a few days, he said.

Destroys Barn Fire at six o'clock
last evening destroyed the barn at
the II lines ranch, according to a re
port at the city fire hall. The other
buildings on the ranch were saved.

Accident at C. Pt. Mrs. Henry Ow
ens today filed an accident report at
the city police station, which occur

The bowling season will be opened
this evening, with Faye Diamond In
charge of the redecorated bowling
alleys at the Natatorlum, it was an
nounced today. Plans are being ar
ranged for the regular "team compe
titions, Mr. Diamond stated.
At least ten teams wilt participate
tn this winter's contests, and several
more plan to Join, he stated. Copco's
team took the league championship
last year.
Prices have been reduced this fall

here as part of the federal recon

Close contests for the Republican
nomination developed in two con
gressional districts in the Washing
ton primaries as tabulation of unof
ficial returns neared completion to
day. In the second district, Congress
man Llndley H. Hadley had a lead of
only 910 votes over Payston Peter
son, Ails closest opponent. Hadley
polled 13,443 votes to 12,523 cast for
Peterson.
In the new sixth district, composed
of Pierce county and 140 precincts
In King county, John T. McCutcheon
polled 8,749 votes In the .Vso pre
cincts reported In the 357 In the ufs
trict, to 7,418 votes cast for Emery
Asbury, his closest competitor. There
were 117 precincts yet to be heard
from. , ,
Two Republican candidates passed
the 100,000 mark In the primary
election. They were Senator Wesley
L. Jones, wlfb defeated Adam Beeler
for the Republican nomination, poll
ing 104.070 votes in 3,308 of the 3.

cast for Beeler, and Lieutenant Gov

wood Mead, federal commissioner of
reclamation with headquarters In
Washington, D. C, has written O. E
Strlcklln, state engineer, that he will
arrive In Portland between Septem
ber 28 and 30. for the purpose of In
specting a number of irrigation pro
jects. Dr. Meade has requested sie confer
ence with representatives of, various
sections of Oregon with relation to
the proposal to obtain loans from the
reconstruction finance corporation
with which to construct Irrigation
works. Mead Indicated that he par
ticularly was interested In the con
struction of reservoirs for storage of
water for use InMrrigatlng lands al
ready under water and colonized.
Refinancing of Irrigation districts,
based on the productive value of the
lands, also will be considered by Dr.
Mead while In Oregon.

found not guilty at a Jury trial In

New York Central railroad today re
ported an increase in through pas
senger traffic to and from the west,
which was taken as an indication of
expanding commercial activity. Over

picture director who killed himself

woman in a Sacramento slough Iden

lette. Both Coroner James Oarllck and
Ed J. Sullivan, olerk at a San Fran
cisco hotel where the young woman
had lived, said there was no doubt
the body was that of Miss Mlllette,
once known as "Mrs. Paul Bern."

ed to her death from a river steamer

searching agency of the Italian gov-
ernment was set to work today to find
the missing monoplane "American
Nurse," which had disappeared on a
non-stop flight from New York to
Rome.
She was due here last midnight
with her crew of two men and a
woman, but there was no report of
the plane after 11.50 a.m., yesterday.
