At a called meeting ot the Jackson County Unemployed Relief Council Friday afternoon In the county court house, fifty men and women respond ed "to discuss plans for relief, to prepare for the winter, and to help ! save the taxpayers' funds" the pur pose of the meeting being so stated by County Agent R. O. Fowler, who presided. The central relief committee con- aletlng of Judge C. B. Lamkln, R. a. Fowler, Mrs. A. E. Reames, C. A. Meeker, CJuy Applewhite, Harry Moore, Ben Harder, Victor Teng wald and Jerry Thornton was voted power to formulate pinna for the county relief work by motion of Mrs. A. K. Renmes. The group also voted to request the central committee to Investigate possibility of providing an education al recreational program as a part of the county a unemployment relief responsibility, also to Investigate the possibility of using the state armor ies as community centers. He estimated that 1000 young people of Medford Just out of school and 1500 Medford men would be without work this winter, Hurnl Arras Need Told. Representatives from Ashland Sams Vnlley, Evans, Union and Lake Creek, Rogue River, McLeod Bellvlew and other districts reported generally that there was greater need than ever before for relief work and Indicated In most cases that the In dividual communities would be able to care for their own needy. Mrs. A. E. Reames, chairman of the women's division of the committee, who recently attended the Oregon Social Workers Council in Portland, reported that Portland expects to aid 100,000 unemployed and antici pates that another 100,000 in the' state outside of Portland must be i cared for. Mrs. Reames reported that Ore gon's problem Is not as serious as that of Washington state where un rest In some localities Is menacing and morale breaking down. Mr. Fowler commended the work being done by the women's division and told the group that two carloivls of tomatoes and pears have been se cured to trade with other counties for necessary supplies. Five hun dred pounds of salmon have been se cured at two and one-half cents & pound cost through the Rogue River Oold Besch plan. Mrs. Donald Clark, food conserva tion chairman, announced that 3, 000 Jars of fruit and vegetable have been canned by the local commit tee In the armory and that some salting and drying also have been done. Unemployed women In ft few Instances have been allowed to aid In canning In exchange for a certain proportion of canned food. It ii ml Canning Told. Mrs, Mabel Mack, home demonstra tion agent, has sent out 1300 cans to the rural districts. Canning kitchens have beeen functioning In Talent, Eagle Point, Rogue River and Butte Falls. The county office provides a tin can se tiler and ft pressure cook er for use In the rural districts. Harry Moore, manager of the local unemployed men's association, plead ed for work for these men who are not asking charity but want work. The work of his organization Is about to be abandoned for lack of support. Mr. Moore said and he predicted that the city would have to care for from 400 to MO families this winter If work cannot be secured soon. He also branded as untrue the report that most of the men of Medford are now employed and also said that there are dozens of children hungry In Medford at the present time, family fowl Fed. Mrs. H. D. McCaskey. a. director of the Jackson County Humane Society, told the group that her organiza tion had been assigned by the cen tral committee to continue the work which they have been carrying on for some time of providing food for milk gnats, horses, fowl, and cows where families dependant upon the animals are unable to secure feed for them. A system of exchange of la bor for such fodder advanoed by an other la being used where possible by the humane society workers. The superintendent of the Ashland Helping Hand Ml Ion gave ft report of Ashland's relief work as did also Mrs. Sam McNalr. E IN ENROLLMENT Complete tabulations of the enroll ment in the Jackson county schools of the first class districts of Ashland and Medford, are not complete, but from reports now In the Indications are that there will be a substantial Increase in enrollment In the county schools. A pp legate reports an Increase) of 100 per cent, Derby 44 per cent. Re Creek 48 per cent and other schools are reporting similar Increases. Books for these students are needed. Districts or Individuals having used books may help the crowded districts by bringing to the county school su perintendent's office such books to be loaned or sold, as desired. At the pre-school meeting held In the new court house before the open ing of the county schools 30 new teachers were present, six of whom have taught in the county In previous years. Of the new teachers all Art graduates of normal achools or col leges. Each year the professional standing of the teacher personnel is rising to a higher level; each year more of the older experienced teach ers are attending summer schools ie that they may offer better servloe to the community In which they work. New teachers coming from colleges or normal schools to teach In ele mentary grades, are: Florence Hun- saker, Mildred Bole, Alice Rudd, June Rudd, Bertha Buford, Ethel Bousaom, Marguerite Watson, Marian Barker, June Sherard, Vera Wright, Louise Hanson, Patsy Thompson, Forrest White. Daisy Lewis, Jean Putnam, A Jackson County Teacher's mual study and singing organization has been formed this year. Miss Harriet Baldwin, muslo supervisor of the Med ford schools, will direct the chorus and advise on matters pertaining to public school muslo. Fern Valley school, Miss Gladjys Mur phy, teacher led county last year in one-room schools In number of li brary books read. .Shady Cove, Miss Annie Wells and Miss Lav I da Culbert son teachers; Independence, Mrs. Vlda Steele and Miss Laura Tork teacher and West Side, Mrs. Agnes Denver and Miss Lucille Arant teachers, scored the highest in number of books read among the two-room schools. Efforts will be directed this year toward Im proving the standard of reading, lead ing the students to develop ft love for Informational reading, as well reading for pleasure and appreciation. Miss June Sherard wilt teach tho Oak Ridge school and Mrs. Eula Salter the school at Hatchery. Applegate school has been reduced: from two teachers to one. High school pupils are being trans ported from McLeod district to Pros pect, from Trail and Lake Creek to Eagle Point, from Orlffln Creek to Jacksonville, and from two bordering districts to Gold Hill. Jacksonville Is not able to furnish transportation this year to the Apple gate district, which fact Is causing much dismay among tho young peo ple of that district who last year at tended high school and formed s aoclatea which they are loath to dis continue. The young people are In need of assistance from generous minded cltlrens of the county, who would like to make It possible for them to help themselves to obtain further high school training. ASHLAllDlLEfIT L With the opening of the Ashland and Talent schools tomorrow, all the schools of tho county city and country will be In operation. Most of the schools started last Monday and Tuesday. An Increase In t.he attendance at the Talent schools Is expected, aa there has been an Influx of peoplo to occupy ft number of small homes In tho vicinity of Talent, and adja cent to the Wagner Creek district.
