PAGE THREE RECALL GIVEN ASHLANDEFFORT Democratic Leader Flatly Refuses to Harbor Peti tion in Place of Business Foots Creek Likewise Efforts of sponsors and backers of the recall plot directed against Cir cuit Judge H. D. Norton, to circulate petitions In Ashland this week, met with opposition, according to reports, An "independent candidate" for county office tried to Induce the "leader of the Ashland Democracy to harbor one of the petitions rn his place of business, It was reported and was refused flatly. A lively ar gument ensued, and the "leader of the Ashland Democracy" emphatic ally declared, "I am opposed to the recall, and want nothing to do with it." The same thing happened at a Foots creek service station, where the recall petition, with two names upon It, was ordered out after two days. The Foots creek district la one of the spots where "law and order broke down," and the home of an out standing victim of an alleged "mis carriage of Justice." Recall In Disfavor. Candidates browsing around among the voters In the country the past week, report the recall is In decided disfavor, confirming the previous re ports of William R. Coleman of this city, and Thomas Pankey of Central Point. Coleman declared It was "the most unpopular move ever Initiated In the county," and Pankey that "nine out of every ten men I meet are opposed to It." Both have lived in the county for years. It was learned this week, on fairly authentic authority, that the recall petitions were printed by a Salem concern which makes a specialty of this form of printing. Fathers son Bashful. As yet no one has confessed the authorship of the petition title, which contains the familiar phrases "bias and prejudice, ' "miscarriage of Jus tice" and "life and liberty imperiled." Neither will anybody admit the fath erhood of the recall scheme. The Central Point American this week editorially remarks, anent the recall plot, as follows; "So in this case. Just line up In your minds the men wbo stand open ly In defense of Judge Norton. Tnen opposite these place the men who have espoused the recall move. Be honest with yourselves, please. Now, what'a the answer? "On the one band yu find the most prominent figures in southern Oregon. Lawyers, doctors, ministers, business men. Look closely, please. Bear in mind all you really know acut these men. Cm you feature there sold citizens, ALL being mis taken as to Norton's character? "Now. on the other hand, have re gard to the opposition Will these faces hear the same close scrutiny? What dc you know about these peo ple? How long, for lr.ata.ncs, has the editor of the Dally News been a resident of Oregon and what has been hi history since coming hore? These ladles who have been circu lating the recall petitions, are they unbiased and disinterested? Are there ANY among those whose skirts are clean of any taint of self-lntereat, or revenge in the matter? Just look 'em over and compare and sift out the testimony for yourselves? COMMUNITY CUES! Of the attention of the board of directors of the Medford community cnest m their meeting at the Chamber of Com merce building yesterday afternoon. The committee report was presented by Hamilton Patton, committee chair man invnivHl & new avatem of budget building for the local chest. It was the recommendation 01 u budget committee that each Institu tional member In the chest shall stand on It. own feet this year, and that, other than the purely relief or ganisation they shall receive as their share of the chest funds only those amounts which shall be designated to them by the donors to the chest, and that space shall be provided on the pledge cards for the designation of funds. Belief Bodies First. In the event that donors do not choose to designate to which organl n fin(4 hall do. the board of directors of the chest will dis pense the funds, as in the past, wltn funds going to relief agencies first. It was felt by the board that this system will eliminate much dissatis faction which lias beau prevalent on account of funda being dispensed to oth.tr than relief organisations, ana will allow the subscribers to the chest to say where their money shall be spent. The budget committee also recom mended that the community chest co-operate fully with the governor's relief committee for Jackson county, particularly In the establishment of a central warehouse for supplies, which may be used by local relief agencies In distributing food and clothing for the needy. .Work to Be Paramount. It waa also the opinion of the di rectors that men be given work wher ever possible, and that the relief funds be distributed so far aa possible In return for work done by the recipients of the relief. A committee consisting of Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, J, O. Mann and W. 8. Bolger waa appointed to ae- lect a campaign chairman for the community chest drive, which will be held either during the last week of October or the first week In No vember, The committee will make Its report In the near future.
