8t. Marie's Guild club held the last
party of the summer season last week
at the home of Mrs. Hugh Hamlin on
the Rogue river. A cafeteria lunch
eon was enjoyed at noon by the 24
guests, after which cards were en
Joyed. Mrs. L. 0. Taylor held high acore,
and other honors went to Mra. Greg
ory and Mrs. Brown. Prizes for the
afternoon were presented by Mrs.
Strange.

ON AUTO PLATES
Official notice has been received by
the sheriff's office from" the secre
tary of state that on and after Wed
nesday, September 21, payments for
auto license permit lor the three-
quarter period will be accepted. This
la what a great many Jackson county
autolsts have been looking for, as It
comes In time for them to go deer
hunting, when it starts September 20,
The three-quarter period issuance
will also boost auto license permit
sales which have been dribbling along
at the rate of 20 per day for the past
two weeks. '
The state' police- continue their
drive to round up cars with "Washing
ton or California license plates, with
the minimum of publicity. They have
also rounded up a number of county
residents for driving without any to
cense at all. On thla charge last
week, K. C, Messenger of the Foots
Creek district was hailed before Jus
tice of the Peace H. D. Reed at Gold
Hill, and given the alternative of
buying a new license, or pay a 5
fine or five days in Jail.
State police have also received &
list of county residents, who within
& fortnight have procured foreign licenses.

A motion, seeking affirmation of
the conviction of Albert W, Reed of
Denver, Colo., serving life in state
prison at Salem, for complicity In
the murder of Victor Knott, Ashland
policeman, last November, will be
filed with the Btate supreme court
Thursday, District Attorney George
A, Codding said today. It was Intend
ed to file the motion Tuesday. It Is
a legal formality, and ends all hopes
for the present, at least, of an appeal
to the supreme court. Reed, nor his
kin and friends were able to raise
200 necessary for preparing the
transcript of the testimony. Two re
courses are open to Reed Gaining a
re-openlng of the appeal plea, and
executive clemency. The latter ia
unlikely for many years, It Is said.
