Tentral MILD WEATHER IS AUGUST FEATURE IN ROGUE VALLEY Mild weather, characteristic of the summer months of 1932 In the Rogue River valley, prevailed throughout August, according to the meteorolog ical notes for August released by W. J. Hutchison, local meteorologist. Except for the first week when tem- peraturea ranged In the higher levels. dally averagea were mostly below normal. A wide range In temperature was experienced during the month, with extremea approaching August recorda of prevlou yeare. The high est, 107 degree, on the 4th was but two degrees below the station record of 109 degrees and the lowest tem perature, 41 degrees on the 31st, lack ed but one degree of equalling the lowest record for August, making a range of 86 degrees for the month. Precipitation was limited to a single shower of 0.13 Inches of rain on the I4th and which, due to tne dryness of the soil, was of little bene fit to the locality. There were a few period of threatening weather dur ing the montn and tnunaerstorms in the mountain were observed on oc casions, however, rainfall from these storms failed to reach the valley. August 31st closed the 1931-1932 rainfall season for the Paclflo coast region and as a whole this season, for Medford and vicinity, waa considered very successful. Although there were a few month with, subnormal pre cipitation accumulations from unus ually wet montha were auincient to off-set the drier periods, and at the close of the aeason an excess of 4.30 lnchea Is shown for the seasonal year. It Is underatood that water for com pleting the Irrigation aeason In the valley I plentiful for all needs. Under the Influence of the exten sive high pressure system which haa covered the northeast Paciric ocean practically throughout the past sum mer montha of July and August, and which haa more or lesa controlled the summer weather In southwestern Oregon in 1932, cloudless skle pre vailed during August with a few and widely separated periods of partly cloudy weather. There were no days recorded aa being totally cloudy. Northwesterly wlnda prevailed and a total wind movement of 4899 miles wa recorded. On the 6th a monthly maximum velocity of 33 mllea per hour .registered during a heavy south and aoutheaaterly wind and dust atorm. Some damage to pear crops In a few orchard resulted from the sud den blow. Wind velocities for the month averaged 6.6 mile per hour, The eclipse of the sun on August 31st wa observed at Medford as partial eclipse, approximately 15 per cent obscurity being visible at 11 ! P. Wilcox, county agent. The paradlchlorobenzlne method of control Is highly successful If prac ticed within the next two weeks. Weak and devitalized peach, prune and apricot trees are more than likely infested with borers and should be treated as follows: Level off the ground around the tree without dis turbing the subsoil. Apply three- fourths to one once of finely crushed pared lchloro be nsene crystals In a cir cle on Inch wide around the tree trunk. The circle should be from orie to two Inches distant from the tree. A few shovels full of fine soil should then be mounded around the tree and firmed well. The crystals slowly give off a gas that Is heavier than air which set tles in around the tree end csusm a killing of the borers within their trunks. For best results the soil should be dry and the temperature 05 degrees or warmer. Trees younger than five years of age should not be treated as the gas may Injure roots. Such trees, if In fested should be dt wormed by means of a knife.
