At Opening of Memorial

esses yesterday afternoon at the Alex
Sparrow Memorial clinic, receiving
guests from 13:30 p. m., on Into the
evening. The memorial, which was
tastefully decorated in flowers for
the first public opening, was visited
by thousands of admiring guests.

Tuesday Entertaining

Whipple entertained at dinner Tues
day evening in honor of Mr. and
Mrs. Melvin Whipple and son who
are visiting here from Chicago, 111.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs.
Melvin Whipple and son, Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Whipple and small son and
daughter of Klamath Falls, Mark
Whipple, Mrs. Carrie Hargadine of
Banta Monica, Cal., and the host and
hostess.
Ash poles Return From
Extensive Motor Trip.
Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Ash pole and
daughter, Pauline, returned Wednes
day evening from a six weeks' motor
trip through Idaho, Utah, Wyoming
and Nevada, and report very en
joyable Journey.
While In Idaho, they were guests
of Mrs. Ashpole's parent. Mr. and
Mrs. Geo. W. Cordon of Rlgby, who
celebrated their golden wedding an
niversary while the Ashpoles were
there.
The Cordons other two daughters
and four sons were also at home from
various states for the party. The
dinner was attended by 80 relatives
and friends and was a very festive
affair.
Mrs. Ashpole's parents are now 73
and 74 years old respectively and still
healthy and sufficiently Interested In
all events to Join their seven sons
and daughters In a Jolly celebration.
The weather encountered during
most of their trip was very pleasant,
the Ashpoles also reported today, the
only uncomfortable hot stretch of
highway being In Nevada. They left
Medford six weeks ago, traveling di
rectly to Reno and continued from
there to the other points visited.
Miss Hutchison Gives
Luncheon for Mrs. Bolton
Mrs. E. W. -Bolton of Seattle, who
Is a guest this week of Miss Fern
Hutchison, was the Incentive of a
delightful luncheon given by Miss
Hutchison at her home weanesaay
Bridge was enjoyed during the after
noon and friends of Mrs. Bolton, who
formerly resided here, invited for the
occasion.
Mrs. Bolton stopped In Medford on
her return from attending the Oylm
plcs In Los Angeles and visiting rela
tives and friends in the south. She
will be joined here tomorrow by Mr.
Bolton, who Is returning from a busi
ness trip to Alaska. They will spend
the week-end in Medford, then leave
for the north Monday.
Brownsboro Children
Entertained at Party
BROWNSBORO Mrs. Monla gave a
party at her home Friday evening
for all the children In the commun
ity. Games were played until a late
rear after which refresh menu were
terved. Those present, Including Mrs.

From Summer in Portland
Miss Alice Seabrooke returned this
week from Portland, where she spent
the summer with her slater, Miss Bea
trice Seabrooke. She has returned
south for the opening of school In the
Central Point district, where she is
an Instructor.

tlle was scheduled for today, if the
matter of meals for the Inmates can
be arranged. In the Mew lockup, the
prisoners have to cook their own
meals, and In the rush of movtn;.
nothing was procured for the in
mate. This matter will be res tilled
today by the county court.
Normalcy came to the new court
house today, with all offices trans
acting business as usual, after a sus
pension of activities yesterday, due
to the dedication and inspection by
the public. The corridors nd offices
were bright today with flowers, re
ceived from local business houses
and people.
The structure la now in tip-top
shape, save for a few minor details,
due to the efficiency and thorough
ness of Harry Turner, who acted as
supervisor for the county court dur
ing the construction of the edifice.
His work has received high praise
from county officials and others ac
quainted with his activities.
The first sessions in the new court
room were held today by Cir
cuit Judge H. D. Norton. Routine
legal matters and a divorce suit were
transacted this morning.

ford and Jackson county is more or
leae of & mecca for transient indi
gent, of the Pacific coast, and the
mid-west Is strengthened by the fol
lowing article from a recent Issue of
the Eugene News:
Lane county has a new baby un
der circumstances none too welcome.
A transient family, a man, woman,
and a lS-months' old child, hitch
hiked to Oregon from the east, push
ing the baby in a carriage. They
were headed for Medford and rela
tives there.
At Corvallls social workers yester
day realised that a second baby was
Imminent, and attempted to send the
family to Medford. A ride was ob
tained for them, but at Eugene the
situation became complicated. They
were brought to the courthouse where
Dr. Ronald Romig and a nurse of the
health unit administered an an
aesthetic, and the woman was rushed
to the hospital, where the baby was
born a few minutes later.
The man seemed not too concerned
at the sudden turn of events, and
remarked that he and the other baby
would probably spend the night at
the Jail. Arrangements were made
for taking care of the child, however.
Mayor's Daughter
Declared Suicide
FREDERICKSBURG. Va., Sept. 2
(AP) A verdict of suicide was re
corded today tn the case of Miss
EllsAbeth Payne, 35-year-old daughter
of Mayor R. J. Payne, who died sev
eral hours after being found fatally
wounded In the office where she
worked.
Named Church Treasurer
PORTLAND, Sept. 3 (AP) The
Rev. F. 8. Mitchell of Deep Creek,
Wash., treasurer of the Oregon Con
ference of the United Brethren
church, was yesterday re-elected to
that office at the annual meeting
here of Oregon and Washington mem
bers of the denomination.

With the peach crop right at the
pesk at the present time. County
Agent Robert O. Fowler stated to
day that people of the valley should
take advantage of the large supply of
the fruit available at the present
time and conserve It for the winter
months.
Reports throughout the valley have
come to his attention that numerous
varieties of peaches are now ready
for canning and preserving.
Besides canning, the fruit may be
dried, or preserved, and according to
the agent, many families will be
badly In need of such food during
the coming winter. He urged that
while the present supply Is available,
that county residents should con
serve as many peaches as possible.
The entire northwest peach crop la
large this year, according to a sur
vey made by the Pacific Fruit and
Produce Co.
