Appointed by tha leglslatve assem
bly of the territory of Oregon as com
missioner of Jackson county, James
- Clugage, Nathaniel O. Dean and Abel
George conducted their first meeting
at Jacksonville March 7, 1883, select
ing James Cluggage as president. Dr.
C. E. Alexander was appointed clerk
of the board on January, 1854.
At that time, Commissioners Mar
tin Angel, B, B. Griffin and John
Glbba composed the board. March,
1854, Patrick Dunn was sworn In to
take the place of John Glbbs, and In
September of the same year Henry
O. Rowland took the place of Mr.
Griffin. ,
J. D. Van Dyke was elected to take
the place of Patrick Dunn In July,
1855, and In January of the follow
ing year Frederick Heber was elected
to take Martin Angel'a place, and
and Dr. G. B. Davidson to succeed
H. O. Rowland. '
After July 14, 1859, a county judge
and two commissioners were elected,
with the positions of commissioners

Construction and maintenance of
county roads, aiding the unemployed,
and hundreds of other useful helps
could be performed In Jackson coun
ty, could all the money be accumu
lated which the 20 treasurera of thla
southern Oregon county have check
ed since Richard Dugan was appoint
ed to that position by the board of
county commissioner on April 5, 1053,
to serve until July, 1854.
From the early days when Jack
sonville was the county seat, and
gold dust was laid on thickly, mil
lions of dollars have passed through
this office, and have been the me
dium of great accomplishments.

PIONEER SHERIFFS
Many ihalr raising episode and
many daring criminal hava been
taken care of by the eherllfa of Jack
son county, aome during the exciting
days of the gold mines, when en
counters with the lawless were nu
merous, and some In lator years of
holdups, bank robberies, murders and
many other crimes which are Includ
ed In the county's history.
Tie names of 30 men appear on
the list as having acted as sheriff In
Jackson oounty, with E. H, Blanohard
heading the list. He was appointed
by the board of county commission
era to the office of elisor on March
7, 1853, to serve until the election
of a sheiff. Thomas Pyle was elect
ed In July, 1B54.

land was elected county commission
ed to take the place of B. B. Ortffln,
the first superintendent of public
schools was elected T. F. Royal.
Since that time 22 people have fill
ed the position of admlnlstratlor over
the multiple districts In Jackson
county.
In the period of time covered by
the history of this office, hundreds
of school buildings bave been con
atructed to replace old ones, and at
the same time equipment waa being
Improved, many new Ideas and aya-
tems were worked Into the curricula
which Improves constantly.
