(AP) The Cuban rumba, which spurted to tremendous popularity In American ballrooms for a ahort time last year, will be back as a favorite this winter, predict dance teachers who are Introducing a new version of the dance with an American flavor. Two of the exponents of the Ameri canized rumba are Jack Holland and June Knight, Fanchon-Marco danc- J on crowded floors, era, who point out that the new rumba has been' simplified so It Is suitable as a ballroom dance. The original rumba called for so many variations of steps that It could be used only on the stage. The Americanized rumba retains the fla vor of the Cuban brand, but has assimilated much of the restraint of the tango and may easily be danced 1 C MANN NAMED PRESIDENT ALLIED WELFARE GROUP (Continued from Page One) I The plan was thoroughly discussed at the meeting and met with consid erable opposition. No vote was taken to determine the sentiment of the luncheon crowd, however. Objections centered about dangers to result through solicitations under such a plan, the objectors pointing out that the beat solicitors would receive the most funds regardless of the Justifi cation from an organization standpoint. Character building organizations J would probably suffer most under such a program, Mr. Patton stated, but the people would . at least be given a chance to say how their money should be spent. A check on solicitations made dur ing the past year, Mr. Patton also stated, however, showed that few people were anxious to name par ticular organizations to receive the contributions. The majority named no favorites and gave the money to the chest to be spent as the budget committee saw fit. Judge C, B. Lamkln, In comment ing upon the general situation and the relief work now being carried on through the Jackson County Council for Relief of Unemployment, stated that the court received Its most valuable Information from the women. He was thanked by the wo men present and assured that they Intend to continue to play their part in the solution of city and county welfare problems. Mrs. Mabel Mack, In the absence of Mrs, A. E. Reames, chairman of the women's division of the county coun cil, described briefly the food con servation work now being carried on. f Letters are out to all teachers or the county with the exception of the Medford and Ashland staffs, announc ing the pre-school meetings Friday In the auditorium of the new county courthouse at the corner of Main and Oakdale, Mrs. Susanna Homes Carter, county school superintendent, said today. Counsel argued that "the pub licity attendant upon their crime" and incarceration waa punishment enough. The court, in passing sentence, re marked upon "the amazing public at titude toward crime, when young men are caught," and the pleas for len iency that followed. The court said its experience with paroles "have not been satisfactory, but not yet caused the court to lose faith In t." The court, In remarks, warned dealers to be more careful In the pur chase of butchered meats." The court further stated that "If arrangements to pay the stockmen for their losses were made, and other things were equal, paroles might be granted. "I will keep In touch with these young men and parole them when I see fit, but that does not mean that friends and relatives should besiege me with pleas." The testimonials of friends and neighbors, many of them written, said Pelle and Ooble were hard workers, addicted to no bad habits, church attendants, good students, and "bet ter than the average boys."
