Taking the country as a whole, the
number of layers In farm flocks this
fall and .winter Is expected to be
about 4 to 6 per cent greater than
last year. This expected increase may
not result In a comparable Increase
In' egg production, however, the re
port points out, as winter conditions
a 'year ago were unusually favorable
for high production, because of gen
eral mild weather and cheap feed.
"Though egg prices In Oregon on
July 35 were only 48 per cent of the
1926-1930 average for that date, eggi
and poultry In generat have not been
especially low In price on the coast
compsred with moat other farm prod
ucts," the report said. "Low prices
are due mostly to poor demand and
low purchasing power of consumers
rather than to high production, sta
tistics show. ,
"Carlot shipments from the west
ern states to date In 1933 have been
40 per cent less than during the same
period a year ago. Storage stocks of
eggs for the entire oountry are about
one-third less than a year ago, but
no shortage Is expected. Commercial
hatcheries In western states show a
sharp decrease In numbers of chicks
hatched.
"A larger supply of poultry for
markets this fall and winter Is fore
seen. As the number of chickens
raised Is estimated at 7.5 per cent
larger, while abundance of chesp feed
will probably result In heavier birds."

para, representing 1100 cars or about
OS per cent of the produce In the
Mil ton-Free water district, have organ,
lsed themselves In-order to stabllln
prices and regulate sales and ship
ments of prunes, It was related here
by W. L. Close, supervisor of ship
ping point Inspection for the state
department of agriculture.
This Is- a unique 'organization In
Oregon, Close said, but it Is already
proving of benefit to growers. The
first car ras sold last Monday and
brought an excellent price. ; '
The members meet dally at two
o'clock In the alternoon and study
prices and sales of prunes from all
points as a sort of stock exchange.
The group Is bound by strict regula
tions and no sales are made at any
pries unless unanimously agreed
upon.

abrupt reversal sent the stock mar
ket up swiftly today, after a slow
decline bad carried many Issues off
1 to 4 points. Some leaders regis
tered extreme gains of 3 to more than
3 point late, although there was a
slight sag Just before the close. The
late tone was strong. Transfers ap
proximated 3,000.000 shares.
The selling, In part a continuation
of the movement late yesterday, dried
up In the afternoon, which encour
aged a fresh bull drive. The Inter
borough Rapid Transit receivership
had only a temporarily dampening
effect upon sentiment, and several
quarters were optlmlstlo over the
probable results of the economic con
ference in Washington.
