Pear Packers Will Compete On Stage At Holly Theatre A packing contest, to 'eslect the world' championship pear paker, la to be conducted at the Holly theatre tn the near future, through the co operation of the Traffic association. It was announced this afternoon by pjlm Baker of the theatre staff, A team of two packers will repre sent each fruit bouse, according to the plan.-, outlined, and cup will be awarded the house entering the prim-winning team. At the assocaltton meeting this afternoon near-blows were reported, when the packing house managers each contended his representatives could outpack the others. feWEODTDTSTS BALEM, Aug. 1ft (AP) Fewer re fund to motorist a the result of destruction of automobiles and er roneous payments of registration fees are being made this year by the sec retary of state It waa announced here today. The average monthly refund during most of the past year has been $183 aa compared to a monthly refund of 9810 the year before. The reason for th large drop was not explained by the department. Although the disbursements for re funds have been decreased, the num ber of claims for refunds have been more numerous during the past few months than normally, the depart ment pointed out. Most of these claims however cannot be recognized under the present law which makes no provision for refunds to persons leaving the state, who suspend opera tion of their automobiles for finan cial reasons, whose machines are temporarily unfit for operation, or whose cars have been repossessed. CLOTHING TAKEN FROM EDI Andy McFarland of 34 Quince street reported to the city police at 10:15 last night that someone had entered his real donee, using a key, and had taken a number of articles of cloth ing. He stated that It was probably some one who was familiar with the hiding place of the key. The clothing reported taken In cluded a coat and two pairs of pants, one dark three-piece suit, a dark coat. a woman's dark green coat, and bath robe. Mr. McFarland stated that a number of clothes were left hang ing In the closet. In their first personal tour, house records were broken and they are expected to bring a capacity crowd at their Medford showings. Telegram Owes $30,000 in Rent PORTLAND, Aug. lft. v.(AP).. ..A judgment of approximately 930,000 against the Portland Telegram waa granted in circuit court here Wednes day to the Barde family of Portland for rent allegedly due on the lease of the Telegram building on Eleventh street. The rental was alleged due on the basis of $1800 a month. Report Collision- A minor automo bile accident was reported at the city police station yesterday, when the cars of John Carkln and George Flake were slightly damaged. Plske allegedly pulled out from the curb, damaging the right aide and both fenders of the Carkln car.. Broadcloth Shirts MEDFORD MX1E- EMPLOYED ASKED TO AID JOBLESS: BY BUYING CARDS Final Instructions will be given to night to the committees from the Association of the Unemployed who will contact all employed men and women In Medford In a campaign to distribute a sufficient quantity of association labor agreements to aid In procuring supplies for the unemploy ed during the coming winter, was the announcement made thle after noon by H. G. Moore, manager of the association. It will be the purpose of the cam paign to urge each employed person to purchase assoclstton lsbor agree ments In the smount of the equiva lent of one daya work per month, and contacts will "be made by special committees which are being appointed today, aided by representatives of the varloua service clubs of the city. A crew of men waa put to work today cutting wood on a wood-lot se lected by the association, and a por tion of the funds derived from the sale of labor agreements will be used to pay the wood-cutting crew for their work. After cutting, the wood will be hauled to Medford, and will be distributed to the needy during the winter months. A number of voluntary purchases of labor agreementa have already been made, according to Mr, Moore, and any others desiring to purchase them may call at the association office In the city hall, where they may be se cured. It Is expected that the sale of these agreements will promote a consider able quantity of work In the commu nity, which might" not otherwise be done, and particular stress Is to be laid on the-obligation of the person who haa a Job at the present time to aid hie fellow-worker who Is not at present so fortunate. All employed persona are urgently requested to give consideration to the committee who will visit them tomorrow or Saturday. OFFICER'S WIFE ESCAPES DEATH PORTLAND, Aug. 18. (AP) Mrs. Dolorea Pratt, wife of Ard Pratt, state police officer at Orfgon City, had ft narrow escape from drowning last night when she slipped from the gangplank of the dancing barge Swan and plunged In the Willamette river. A lifeboat picked her up after she had been swimming 30 minutes in the cold water, fully clothed. She fell while trying to make her way from the barge to the deck of the tug boat which propels the Swan. Although Mrs. Pratt underwent ft major operation three weeks ago she suffered no 111 effects today from the plunge. TO WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (AP) President Hoover went back to work today considering, among other things, the progress of his plana for the meeting next week which he hopes will put the active aid of many prominent men behind ft drive for better business. (AP) The "battle of the highway," re sulting from strikes by farmers for higher prices, waa being fought on three fronts today Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Extending their blockade of Iowa and South Dakota highways Into Da kota county, Nebraska, picketing farmers, who ssy they sre determined to withhold produce from the mar ket until prices go higher, hemmed In Sioux City, on all eldea, and the situation appeared serious enough to Sheriff Hugh Slocum at Stevens, 8. D., to sppeal to the state sheriff for help. Disarm Sheriff. Sheriff Slocum acted after a group of about 100' farmera. picketing a highway at Stevens, forced him and his deputies to atop escorting a fleet of five trucks to Sioux City. One shot vu fired in the air by the sheriff, who was overpowered by the farmera and relieved of hla wea pon.
