PAGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRTBUOT, MEDFORD, OREGON', MONDAY, AUGUST 8, 1932. E IIS MARATHON E Zabala Plods 26 Miles, 385 Yards in 2 Hours 31 Minutes Yankees Win Team Triumphs in Relays By ALAN GOULD, AsMctatcd Press Sports Editor, LOS ANGELES. Aug. 8. (AP) To the swarthy black-haired son of the Argentine, Juan Carlos Zabala, win ner of the classic Olympic marathon with a record-breaking performance, end to the sweeping triumph of America's fast-stepping, high-flying boys and girls, go the chief honors of the Olmplc track and field champ lonahlps today. While tbe forces of the United States were crowning their team tri umph yesterday with amazing flash es of relay speed, adding four new world records to the dizzy whirl In the Olympic stadium, . Zabala was plodding the city street, wearing down his rival with machine-like strides that carried him strongly to the fin ish In the new Olympic record time of two hours, 31 minutes, 30 seconds for the route of 29 miles, 385 yards. The sensawDiittl victory of the 30-year-old Argentine, whose swift pace broka the hearts of a half-dozen fav orites, carrying him home 200 yards ahead of Bam Ferris, British veteran, with a Flnlander, another Briton, two Japanese and an American next at the line of finish, capped the climax of eight days of athletic competition unparalleled In world history. There Is many an Olympic battle still to be fought along a rapidly widening front, with California's crew engaged In the defense of American elght-oared honors, the Yankee box ers facing British brisk skirmishers and U. 8. swimmers challenged al ready by Japan's sensational young aquatic stars, but It will be a long time before the thrills, the astounding records, the argument and the of ficial "boners" of the track and field championships are forgotten. Nurml Eclipsed, There has never been a combined athletic show for men and women like It. They thought much of the "kick" was extracted when the peer leas Paavo Nurml was banished from the games, two days before they started, but performances from the outset not only were so startling as to make about 400,000 spectator for get all about the great Finn during the week but sufficiently good as well to knock the last of Nurml' Olympic marks from the record list. What Paavo might have done yester day In the marathon Is something else, a subject that may be used for further debate, but Nurml at bla very best would have had his hands full trying to head off Zabala, Nurml throughout the week sat In the stands while his native Finland's stars were being handed their biggest setbacks In Olympic competition since the war, watching a Polander, Ku aoclnkl, take away the 10,000 meter honors, seeing "Jarring Jim" Bausch, an American, surpass Finland's fav ored all-around stars in a world-record decathlon performance, and an Italian, Beccall, put Finland's champ Jon and the rest of the world's mllers to rout In the classic 1000. Finland Outclassed. Finland won only three individual championships while the United States celebrated Its comeback on home soli and the fastest of all Olym. plo tracks by romping off wltti five of 11 of the 23 men's championships, In addition to five of the six wom en's title evenU, for the best all around Olymplo showing the V. B. A. has known in twenty years. The Americans won the men's team i championship with the aggregate of 316 points, to Finland's second place, en's contests, and equalled in three 73. The margin was even wider In the feminine division, where the American girls rolled tip IB 1-2 points to 10 1-2 for Germany, In second place. ' All told, Olymplo records were wiped out completely In 20 of the 20 vents for men and women. The only event that escaped the record smashing process were the hammer throw, broad Jump and high Jump, besides the 00,000 meter walk, a new event, for which the time must stand at least as a new Olymplo standard. World records were surpassed In 13 events, Including all six of the worn others. All of which makes quite a tune on Anybody's sccordlsn. PEERS POTLI G HT IT!
