PEAR PRODUCERS (Continued from Page One.) of the east could use pears their Inhabitants like them the same aa do fie people of New York." Dr. Hartman said In considering the Boso campalgna in Detroit and Pitts burg : "It should be remembered that the campaigns were only well under way when t!:e depression came. Both are Industrial centers and when great plants opernta on a short-week basis the buying power Is crippled. Orchard sanitation, for the ellml nation of "pin-hole rot' In the Win ter Nells varieties, aand "neat rot" In the D'AnJoua warn urged, as "the trade has a definite prejudice against Viese defects." Questions Answered In response to a query, ha said he believed the European marta would prove rich fields, particularly France and Italy, where the pebpto "have a natural fondness for soft fruit. A letter from J. W. Herbert, gen eral manager of the Yakima Fruit growers' association, waa presented aa follows: "The Yakima Fruit Growers' asso ciation, popularly known as The Big Y,' has been for many years inter ested in advertising it brand of fruit In the markets of the world. It has been In buslneaa for 31 years and during that time has spent many t.houaands of dollars In advertising. It waa not, however, until the In dustrial advertising campaigns where in everyone Joined, that any real, sub stantial results have been obtained. The Big Y was willing and has con tinued in large measure to subor dinate its own brand advertising to that of Industrial campaigns. With the Inauguration of the Washington Boxed Apple Bureau In P2S it threw the weight of Its ton nage and resources behind the move ment and we gave of our time and advertising experience unstlntlngly to the success of the movement. The results have amply rewarded the fruit growers for the money contributed to this sales work. Our board of trus tees last week voted unanimously to contributing to the support of he apple bureau and that despite the hardship and low returns of the past season. With our apple tonnage run ning from 2600 to 9000 cars yearly, Its Interest in the apple advertising Is substantial, but one which the growers willingly support for the good of the entire Industry. 'The same Is true of the Yakima Valley Peach Bureau, The Big Y handles each year from 600 to 800 cars of peaches. It was influential In starting the peach bureau four years ago. The growers voted unanl moily again this year to support It in t,he knowledge that It has time and again proved its worth and last year saved the peach growers from an absolute debacle. "The Big Y pear growers are equally Interested In the work of the Oregon Washington Pear Bureau. Our own full and winter pear tonnage Is not large, running from 250 to 300 cars, as compared with the Bartlett ton nnge of around 600 cars yearly. How ever, the growers of theae winter va rieties are also peach and apple grow era; they know from experience the merits of a well conducted advertis ing program over a period of years, and have voted to support the pear bureau along with the apple and peaon bureaus to which they have contributed for a longer number of years. "They are glad of the opportunity to Join with the other pear growers of Oregon and Washington In the support of this movement, which they believe la essential to the welfare of the pear Industry of- the Pacific northwest." Mr, and Mra. Dan T. Taylor of Reno, Nev., spent th week-end her visltli a Mr. and Mra. Fred Stevens and calling upon membera of Med ford post of the American Legion In behnlf of Oeorg W, Malone, prom Incut Nevada legionnaire and candi date for national commander of th organlratlon at th convention to be held In Portland next month.
