Feists Go North Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Feist and son left yesterday on the Shasta for Portland, to which city Mr. Feist has been transferred by the Standard Oil company of Call fornia from the local office. Mr. Feist will be given a fine position in the northern city. Ho was with the Stan dard OH company in Tacoma, Wash., before coming to the Medford office, through which he cultivated many friends, who regret his departure north. Music Week Opens Craterian Theater With Song Contest This week wilt be music week at the Fox Craterian theater and an especially entertaining program Is being planned in celebration. Sun day, Monday and Tuesday nights a singing contest will be sponsored by the theater. The try-outs to fill the Sunday and Monday program period and the finals Tuesday's. Wednesday the Garden club flower show will be held at the theater and Miss Ellow Mae Wilson and Mrs. George Andrews will add the musical offering. They will also entertain Thursday. A harmonica contest has been arranged for Thurcuay with three prizes offered by the Prultt Melody Shop. First and second prizes will be Hohner harmonicas and the third a violin tone harmonica. All mouth organ artists interested In entering are urged to get in touch with Don Geddes, manager of the theater some time before Thursday at 6:00 p. m., w.ien all entries must be In. The Arizona Wranglers, now on tour, will appear at the theater on August 19 and 20; Mr. Geddes also announced yesterday. IN LATE AUGUST Harvest of the canning tomatoes in the valley should start by the lat ter part of August, according to County Agent R. G. Fowler who made an inspection of the crop recently. There are 265 acres of tomatoes out this year. The weather has not been particularly conducive toward theJr rapid development, but they are form. mg well and solidly and with warm weather the latter part of next month they should ripen well. Organization of Jackson county re lief work was launched Friday with the appointment of committees to carry on the work. The committees were named by County Judge C. B. Lamkin, with the recommendation from Robert G. Fowler, general chair man, that they start functioning at once. It was also recommended that a committee of three bo appointed In each community of the county. Chairmen of the community com mittees were also named, being mas ters of the grange where possible, they to appoint two others. Bloom, E VANDALS TARGET Serious vandalism, attributed to a gang of neighborhood bad boys was committed early Saturday morning at the Chanticleer service station on the Crater Lake highway, near the city limits. The gasoline tank hose was cut and the contents allowed to drop on the ground, followed by an attempt to set fire to the gasoline. Burnt matches were found near by the stats police. Failure of the gas to Ignite prevented a large blase or ex plosion. According to the state police, a number of depredations have been committed at the service station, such as cutting water hoae, tramp ling flowers, and tampering with the pumps. Even wo men may be seen along t,he streams with a gold pan. Several from dis tant places are working their own claims or for companies. Some of them are J. A. Anderson, of Salem, on Middle Fork; F. B. Salisbury and son of Everett, Wash., on Yellow Jacket; Paul J. McCurdy, of Port TownBend, Wash., on Upper Apple gate; W, A. Peabody, of Ashland, on Carberry. Mil BY RURAL SCHOOLS IN COUNTY LIBRARY TEST The Juvenile department of th public library la exhibiting book maps made by rural schools of this county during a recent contest. Th contest, open to all rural grade schools served by the Jackson Coun ty Library, entailed the making of an outline map of the world, on which were entered In the proper lo cale the titles of books read In the schools during the past year. The schools were divided into two divisions: Group A Including one room schools In which all grades worked together; and group B, two or more room schools where each, room worked Individually. Fern Valley School, under the di rection of Miss Gladys Murphy, waa winner of the first group, with ft map, illustrated with cut-out pic tures. The price for group B waa won by West Side school under the supervision of Mrs. Deaver. Honor able mention for the most original work went to Shady Cove school, with a map illustrated with represen tative flgurfs carved from wood, and to the seventh grade at Phoenix school, whose map was Illustrated with pencil drawings.
