Gamblers Throw tni Eustace L. AdamA. , UNOPSIS! Prisoners on a lonely Island, an unusual group of 'people wait for rescue. Abduoted by an unusually daring gang Nancy Wentworth. lour rich busi- ' nest men and a gangster. Lucol, try to withstand the nervous, strain of suspense and tropica heat. Ashwood, the gang' leader, who Is young but white-haired and Is lame, demands a new form of ransom installments of board money. While this money was be- -Ug collected by the gang from an Uolated spot their hydroplane was seen by Jerry Calhoun, Emory Battles and Stevens, a ue tective, who are searching for the kidnapers. The three start to fol low in their awn airplane, hoping to find the gang's hidden head Quarters. Meanwhile, Aehwood amuses himself observing the re actions of the prisoners to their predicament, lie telle Nancy that they have all been selected care fully, and are good psychological -. material for etudy. Nancy asks who te paying her board money. Chapter 14 RACKETS rERE was a malicious gleam In the cripple's eyes as be watched a pelican wade at the edge of 'he beach. "Perhaps we'd better take up one question at a time," bo suggested to Nancy. "I happened, quite by acci dent, to see a splendid picture ot you In the rotograph section ot a Sunday newspaper lust as .1 was making out my guest list. Beneath It was a" caption to the effect that you were engaged to be married to one ot America's wealthiest men. Since ydur Banco established, so to -.sak. your financial standing, It occurred to me that you would be a p welcome addition to our somewhat exclusive little circle. "I am quite happy to say that Mr. board bill without undue protest." Nancy sat very still tor some mo ments, staring thoughtfully across the glittering water, "Tell me, Mr. Ashwood," sbe ask ed at length, "why did you come down here yourself when you knew ,we would all be able to Identity yon Jn court It you are ever captured r" "That Miss Wenlwortb, was part ot my plan. My past efforts have been extraordinarily remunerative, but, being a restless spirit,' I have become bored with them. This is my last racket, as the worthy Mr, Luce! would term it" "When I first discovered tbe value fit airplanes as part ot every Intel ligent criminal's- equipment," he wont on,, blandly, "I allowed my imagination to run riot upon the uses to which so novel an Instru ment might be put This plan oc curred to me, bit by bit and J spent tbe better part ot six moiths (lading a proper location tor my guest house. jib luat. uisiuroiou mis iBinau, , which is nothing short ot Ideal tor . the purpose. I purchased portable ; house, with all the equipment, gaso line lighting plant electrla refrig erator and the like, and brought it bore on a scow, where my men erectod It Very simple Job It was, too. "When the house ,has served Its purpose, I iudll disappear. My sanc tuary awaits me., In It I have a grand' piano, a modern radio and thousands ot books, enough to last me until I die. There, comfortable, surrounded with the things I love, I shall meditate upon these days ot roguery, browse contentedly through my library and, perhaps, write a book or two." He smiled at her, a wide-mouthed, generous smile which 'contrasted strangoly with his words and hleao tlons. She found herself amaied beyond belief at the strange philoso phy of this remarkable man. She wondered what ho had suffered to give him this warped outlook upon lite, but her Intuition warned her that It would not be wise to probe - too deeply, "Ah, Mr. LuccI," he said, looking over nor shoulder, "ybur presence this morning speaks wonders tor your stamina. You'll pardon me, I'm sure, but that diagonal bandage gives your face an uncommonly ret fish look. Bow are the other In- mates T" One-shot his face , crisscrossed with bandages and surgeon's plaster, grinned painfully. , "Creiy as ever, Llmpy," he re plied thickly. "Mallory's still In bed. Just saw the steward taking him a highball. Hamilton Is back at bis blamed solitaire. Martin's sitting In a corner saying nothing while Wll Hams tells him what's the differ , ence between May and September wheat" . "How delightful!" commented the cripple. LuccI looked at him In wonder. This was a strange bird. A little potty, maybe, but a racketeer auch aa gangland had never known be fore and would nover know again. "Listen, Llmpy," he said abruptly, Ignoring Nancy's presence, "I don't begrudge you this game one damn WILL BE REQUESTED BERLIN, July as. I control every monoy-maklng racket west ot tbe Alleghanles. My muscle men are n on the graft In Chicago, Detroit Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis ana Kansas City. In each ot those cities. my men act as ne secretaries ot my outfits and J get the dues, see? No dues; no protection. No protec tion; no business, see? I got organ izers working right now In the East and In another ail months there won't be a cleaner- and dyer, a garageman or a milk dealer in the United States who ain't kicking In, see? And that ain't half. There are a few guys who are backing me," he continued earnest ly, "but my gorillas will take care of them. I never been able to make out Just what your racket Is. 1 know that damn tunny things happen every once In a while and when they do I hear talk about Llmpy Ashwood. Are you the bird whose mob Is bringing In all the'dlamonda from Antwerp?" He glared at the cripple challenging!?. While a lawyer might object to that as a leading quostlon," smiled Ashwood, "It Is flattering, coming from you. I bare been Interested In the tax-tree Importation ot diamonds on a fairly large scale." How'd you get them by tbe cus toms?" demanded the other, In credulously. 'At a prearranged spot oft Nan tucket lightship, my man on the steamer drops them overboard In a metal canister. One hour later the canister erupts a great quantity of chemical smoke. My amphibian, which at that moment Is cruising In the vicinity, spots the smoke and picks uptbe container. Quite simple, eh?" . The battered gangster stared at him in undisguised admiration. , How many men you got In your mob?" he inquired. Forty-four," replied the cripple carelessly, "scattered .here and there around tbe world." , , That alu't many," stated the other disparagingly. "1 got more than five hundred." He stopped and appeared to ponder. Then, aa a sud den thought struck him; "Did you put over the 'silk express robbery, three months ago?" "My men did," Ashwood admitted. I did little more than to fly the plane. It happened that my regular pilot was 111." ; "Fly the plane?" The gangster seemed puttied. Then his face cleared In sudden understanding. "Sure. That's how you made your getaway! ' No wonder the bulla couldn't pick up your tracka. Now listen, Llmpy, bow about the two ot us hooking up? .We can make twenty millions apiece In the next year and that ain't boloney, eltherl Twenty millions, easyl" The frail figure In tbe deck chair stirred uneasily. His eyes had be come weary and old. ' I'm afraid not LuccI. I don't want twenty millions. I hare about all I want now. And ao have my men.i I've shared with them and wben we are through our efforts here, we're going to break up as an organised unit For my part, I'm going to retire." ;; (.. He looked far Into the northern sky, focussing his eyes Intently, '- "Of course," he added, "there'a the ver-present element ot uncer tainty which makes this a stimu lating profession, 1 Plans are sub ject to change without notice. For instance, It In not mistaken; the crew ot that airplane up there may hare something to say about our Immediate future." Nancy and LuccI, followed tbe line' ot his pointing finger, saw a tiny dot In the morning sky. As they watched It the faint pulsing drone ot Its motor came to their ears. The guard on the beach hastily dismounted his machine gun and carried it beneath the sheltering leaves ot a palm. Another guard appeared, who began to do things to the breech of the gun. Three men dashed out of the service door of the house and raced down to the hangar. Presently the entire Island shook to the thundering hols ot the amphibian's engine. A man ap peared at the hangar door, dressed In coveralls and helmet He stood there, gating alertly at the porch, as It awaiting aome sign from tbe white-haired cripple. (Copyright.
