Ma" and her husband, James E.
Ferguson, also a former governor, who
was Impeached after election to a sec

say "at this time."
Ma's campaign largely was con

was featured by attacks on reputed
extravagance of the Sterling admin

Political Drama .
At Fox Craterian
Einstein's theory of "bent light'
has nothing on a camera that can
"shoot" around two corners at once,
This paradoxical . feat was acorn-
plished in the filming of "The
Washington Masquerade," now show
ing at the Fox-Craterlan theatre,
with Llonlel Barrymore in the leading
role.
The camera filmed Barrymore In
a scene, and at the same time looked
around two .corners and picked up
Karen Money In another room. Mir
rors, scientifically ground and fo
cused, and placed at strategic angles,
made the effect possible. From an
optical standpoint the scene was one
of the most Intricate ever filmed.
"The Washington Masquerade.1
based on the Henry Bernstein stage
hit, "The Claw." is a vivid drama of
political life at the national capital
Barrymore plays a senator from the
middle west who becomes a towering
figure In national politics until his
career is endangered by a woman.
Many "inside" glimpses into political
affairs are given.

BIRTH CONTROL
DECISION OPENS
HOI' ARGUMENT
CHICAGO. July 25 (AP) A storm
of contradictory comment has fol
lowed a decision by Circuit Judge
Daniel P. Trude In which he gave
the first judlclat approval of birth
control ever expressed In Chicago,
The decision was given in the case
of Mrs. Gertrude Bemls who was
granted separate maintenance from
her husband, Walter J. Bemls, a con
sulting engineer.
"It Is ev'.dent to me," the court
said, "that too many children have
been born to this couple. The mother
rebelled at motherhood. The Job was
too much for her.
In granting the separate mainten
ance Judge Trude specifically cited
the couple's five children as the rea
son for their marital discord, and
Ignored Mrs. Bemls' charge that her
husband centered hls attentions on
anotner woman.
Commenting on the court's action,
Dr. Rachelle Yarros. a woman medical
specialist, said "a woman ought to
have the right to decide how many
children she can care for without In
Jury to her health."
Judge Joseph A. Oraber of the
court of domestic relations, on the
other hand, took an opposing view,
I have found that children do
more to patch up broken homes than
any other single factor," he said-
Judge Trude told Mrs. Bemls to go
to California on a vacation, away
from her five children.

HOLLYWOOD One way to become
a movie director Is to buy a wild
horse, write a story to star it In and
convince a producer you're the only
one to direct the picture.
That, briefly, Is how Earl Haley,
who served a long apprenticeship in
the studlrw. haa achieved his ambi
tion. He is a remarkably enthusias
tic fellow of 28 whose eagerness Is
the reason h dldnt remain a day
laborer long, once he got Inside a
studio.
A few months ago, while an assis
tant director, Haley purchased the
long inactive Rex, so-called king of
wild horses, his running mate, Lady,
and Marquis, the heavy In every
horse opera. Rex has been starred in
several films, one of which netted Hal
Roach, according to report, nearly a
million douara.
A few days ago. Haley's friend,
