This town laiily radiates friendliness and hospitality. THE occasion la th celebration of the completion, or near comple tion, of the Yellowstone eut-off high way, extending from Redding to Boise and passing through Alturas, Lake l view and Burns. , People are gathered here from Cali fornia, Nevada, Idaho, Washington and Oregon to help in the celebrat ing. They're real people, too, and they know how to celebrate. ArjoiE Johnsen, of Medford, shows up with a bruise on the side of his face that is a wow. He explains that he got it by diving too deep into Dick Shcpard'a hot springs pool. oh -well; among friends one ex planation Is as good as another. CELEBRATIONS Involve banquets, and this one is no exception. The banquet Is in the pleasant dining room of Lloyd ogle's Hotel XakevleMr. Lloyd expected 100 people, and 200 have Just descended upon him and clamored for tickets. If you are housewife and have ever had unexpected company, you know what that means. BEET Snyder, 'president of the Lakeview chamber of commerce, presides suave and polished, kindly and thoughtful, giving to each speak er Just the right little pat on the back to put him up on his toes, all set to do his best the perfect toast master. Ernie Petseh, fprmer.presidenti.4t- the chamber of commerce, now mayar welcomes the guests to Lakeview, and means every word of it. Because you KNOW he means every word of It, you get that warm little glow around the heart as you listen to him; that leellng of being perfectly welcome that makes really successful parties stand out In your life. These Lakeview people! There may be other folk as hospitable In the world, but this writer has doubts. CLARK Cottfeu! of the California state Automobile association, so homely one wonders how winsome Mrs. Cottrell ever came to pick him, rises. Then he smiles and begins to apeak, and you say to yourself: What a strikingly attractive man!" Funny how people are that way. Isn't it? 7 D. B. Dodson, manager of the VI. Portland chamber of commerce tells us how delighted Portland la over the completion of this new high way which will lead west-bound tour ists off from the Old Oregon Trail and take them to California without ever seeing Portland and makes us believe It. He has a tongue that can charm the little birds right off the trees. THROUGHOUT all the rest of Ore gon, he Is known to one and ail as "Dod." Down here on his home range he grew up in the Surprise valley, over beyond Alturas he is hailed as Boone Dodson. So that's what the "B" in his three-barrelled Initials Is for. "Dod" rode the range down In this country in his younger days, and is just barely bow-legged enough to prove it. GEORGE Joseph,' Jr., representing Governor Meier, makes a grace ful and effective speech. His talented father cams from this country down here. "Something was said to me yester day that I liked very much." he said. "I met an old friend of my father, and he looked me in the eye and said to me: TouU never be the man your father was." "I liked that, becauaj It was frank and open and aincere like th peo ple of this great country down here " BS, he must be right. It is the frankness, the openness, the plain, honest sincerity of these great open spsces out here that cause on to like them so very, very much indeed. This Tellowstone cut-off, whose near-completion Is being celebrated with so much enthusiasm by those who have worked o hard and so ef fectively to make It a reality, is going DISCLOSES PLOT 0U1UILI1 Office of Merger Sponsors 'Entered' by Friends of Scheme; Is Revelation Shields Accomplices PORTLAND, Ore,,- July 11. GANNON FLAYS OEM ROM PLANK LAKE JTOALUSKA, X. O., July II. W) The Democratic party's plank for the repeal of the eighteenth amendment has drawn the fire of the board of temperance and social serv ice of the Methodist Episcopal church south, and of Bishop James Cannon, Jr., who was the mainspring of the antl-mlth movement which swept part of the "solid south" into the Republican foid in 1928.
