Phshlan. nosed out Earl Tumy by onehole yesterday afternoon, to reach the sem-tlnals In the Medford golf club tournament. It was one of the closest matches of the present tour nament, and developed some high elaai golf. At the turn Tumy who had had trouble with his putter from the start, was two down, but squared the match when he took a birdie on the 10th and a par on the 11th. Phythlan however refused to be headed and alnklng one putt on the next two holea was again two up when the 18th tee was reached. Here Tumy tighten ed, won tne loth and halved the 17th, driving for the final hole, one down. His drive was a beauty, but hi second shot was to the left of the green In the rough. He chipped out with deadly accuracy, and sunk his putt for a par V Phythlan howevnr, never faltered and In aplte of his wlldneaa got a 5 which with his stroke halved the hole and gave him the match. Some idea of the brand of golf played and the cioaeneaa of the match, may be gained by the fact that while Tumy shot a 37 on the ecod nine, he won only one hole, even tho his opponent had an ad vantage of only 8 strokes. By Floyd House It would probably sound like Idle talk to most persons If we were to atate that within a few years many of our state and county fairs would be the scene of hotly contested apeed- boat races right in front of the grand stand. Surely, a dozen trim little speed boats skimming over the water at 60 mllea per hour would be more In teresting to view than a few ancient race horses kicking up dust and grime for the spectators to bresthe. The United States has at present one artificial motor boat race course, which Is located In the desert lands near Houston. Texas. It Is built from an abandoned horse racetrack, one half mile oval, water five feet In depth and the "track" la about 200 feet wide. This forms a perfect course for hydroplane and speedboat racing such as the Medford enthusi asts vision. Medford Is near an Ideal and valu able location where It could econom ically construct Just such an enter prise and playground for their lovers of this clean and thrilling sport. The county fair grounds Is a "natural," the water Is piped right to the loca tion with a six-inch main; clean, pure water to fill the race course and drained at Intervals during the sum mer months doubling Its purpose by flushing Bear creek, While attending race meet in va rious cities in Oregon and Califor nia, the writer la frequently asked the question, "Why Is Medford so well represented at every race meet in the country: they have no lakes or rivers close by; why all the race boats?" The question la hard to an swer, except that "It a Great Coun try, with a lot of wide-awake, red blooded people." It Is believed that with motor-boat racing at the Jackson county fair this fall, the fair would not only be a huge success but would be the first and only one of Its kind In the world, attracting movie news reels and creating wldeapread lntereat throughout the country in Medford' speedboat racing at Vie county fair "horse track." During the summer month the fair ground could be made the cen ter of attraction with boat race held frequently. Concessions, boat houses, etc., rented to the fsst growing num ber of boating enthusiast would shortly pay for the building of such a project.
