By Gayle Talbot (Associated Press Sport Writer) Jtmmie Foxx, who a year or two ago wouldn't have been mentioned In the same breath with the great Babe Ruth as a distance hitter, threatens now to surpass anything Ruth ever had done in the matter of fashioning homeruns. With 38 four-maatera to his credit at this time, there seems good reason to believe the Athletics' star slugger will pass the Babe's record of AO In 1837. Ruth did not get number 38 until July 9, giving Foxx a leeway of more than two weeks In his as aault on the mark that had been re garded as unbeatable. Babe Seven Behind ' The Babe who was hitting only .813 today, Is seven homers behind Foxx. Jimmle has not let his duel with the Babe interfere with other chorea. He has round time to hit a sound JBl and to lead the American league In three other departments of bat ting. Victor Fresler, White Box right hander, was Foxx's 38th victim yes terday. It was not a game-winner. however, as Waaler went right on to beat three Philadelphia hurlera, B to 4. Detroit bounced Into second place la the American league by making It three straight over Boston, 6 to A, as the A'a and Washington both loat to western rivals. Cleveland walloped the Senators. 11 to 3, for their first win In over the Solons this year. Every Indian scored at least once. Browns Win Slngfeat A ten-run rally In the sixth In ning, when Danny Macfayden and Walt Brown were pummelled freely gave the St. Louis Browns a 17 to 10 decision over the Yankees. Lou Gher- lr cracked a brace of homeruns for the Mew Yorkers. In an effort to get his New York Olents back on the right track, Bill Terry socked a homerun, a double and two singles to help best the St, Louis Cardinals, 9 to 1. Carl Bubbell limited the champions to two hits. Flint Rhem pitched the Phillies to aa 11 to 3 triumph over the league leading Chicago Cubs. Cincinnati made It three out of four over the Boston Braves, 14 to 8. i Although Rack: Wilson punched two homeruns, his 13th and 13th of the season, Brooklyn dropped its final to Pittsburgh, 7 to 8. If true, this leaves In the running Gene Sarazen. certainly, wnom especially favor In the blue ribbon tournament; and Harry uooper. aim Leo the Dleg; and Sir Walter Hsgen. And plenty of others. The Idea is, i snow, ns ficmm Meadow la a "second shot" course, as somewhat opposed to Inverness of 1931, and Olympla Fields, of 1938. where, If you did not place that drive with a very decent accuracy, your second shot was leas a matter of stop ping on the green than of getting back within striking distance of the same. I should not say that Freeh Mea dow Is the same type of second-shot course as Winged Foot, which csrriet the same term though the Flushing layout and that at Mamaroneck are about as similar as any brace of championship teats offered In the last score of years. Here, however, Is the Idea that sug gests the long-knocker as an auto matic favorite, other points being at all near equal. Course Plenty Long The Fresh Meadow course Is 8770 varrla around, whloh Is a lot of golf course, especially when you reflect that the one-aho"! holes are not par. tlcularly long, and that there are only two three-shotteri. These latter are the fifth hole, 681 yards, and the sixteenth, S84, neither of which Is at all likely to succumb to the eecona stroke of the longest wallopers. Wherefore, the big hitters will have no special advantage on the two par 6 holes. The nar 8 holes are of 1S8, 160, 188 and 309 yards very neatly gauged for the maahle-nlbltck. the apade or mashle, the light Iron, and the big Iron or enoon. And eleven of the remaining holes are of 406 yards or better the tough two-shot type where you need at the same time a big drive well placed ano nlentv of second shot. A simple calculation reveals the correlative fact that this leaves only three holes of the drlve-and-klck type eo popular with competitors who have a etralght, moderate tee shot and a deadly pitch. Theae play era, It la safe to say, will not get far on this course In the open champion ship on such qusllflcatlons alone. Par Is a vicious 88-3570 for course measuring 8376-38988770 yards. Could nt Equal Par In one of the beat remembered competitions at Fresh Meadow by two players who know and Uke the course Sarazen and Tommy Armour the latter won the P. O. A. title two years ago by a single hole. Tommy did a 71 In the morning round and Oene a 73. Each scored a 7S In the afternoon. Both were playing excel lent golf. If this Indicates anything, It li that nar of the Fresh Meadow course, 380, is not figured within ten strokee of being fractured by the 1933 win ner, and that the score ny amy Burke and Oeorge Von Elm on the much shorter layout at Inverntaa, 993, ahould be somewhere around the winning mark at Flushing, while Bil ly will have to itretch his drives bit. and Von Elm adjust his Irons, It either la to come close to repeating. It Is reasonably certain that 1 drlve-and-pltch artist Is going to win this year. YOKOHAMA. Japan, June 33. (AP), Jack Dempsey, once the king-pin of the heavyweights and who still rates his services so high that most promoters are dodging him, was a bit perplexed when asked If he would consider meeting Jack Sharkey, the present titleholder. "Fight Sharkey? Yea and' no: but on the other hand" he told friends here, and launched Into bis views on the last, world's heavyweight title bout. "As I get It. Sharkey got paated good," aald the former champion. The verdict doesn t oo mm a of good and It does the German no harm. I believe Sharkey emerges more unpopular than ever. Not that It la his fault, but that the experts eeem to be unanimous m stating that the wrong man's hand was ralaed. "I know better than to Judge fiBhta from radio description, but when so many fight writers string with Schmellng It looks like some bodv booted one along the line. "If Joe Jacobs (manager of Schmel. lng) was suspicious of Gunbor.t Smith In the referee's role, why did be stand for" him? Whyldn't he stand pat against such a referee and refuse to go on. Outstanding contract players bid to the hilt in the expectation that they will get full value out of their cards. Often to fulfill contracts It necessary to make an end play, that la, put an opponent In the lead nn of the last tricks of the hand and so handle the cards prior to such step that the opponent Is compelled to lead to a tenace of the declarer or dummy. A good Illustration of an end play la a hand on which Bill Huske of New York made five clubs, doubled and redoubled vulnerable.
