G. 0. P. PLANK AS
. NEW YORK, June 31. (AP)
Branding the Republican prohibition
plank aa a "political blunder of the
first magnitude," Dr. Nicholas Mur
ray Butler today in an Interview with
the World Telegram predicted the
party will "go over the dam" in No.
v ember unless state conventions In
wet. Industrialised New England and
Middle Atlantic states repudiate the
plank.
The article stated that Dr. Butler
would cut short his annual trip to
Europe as head of the Carnegls
Peace foundation and return home
In lass thsn a month to lead, a
campaign to bring about repudiation
of the plank by the state conven
tions. Dr. Butler Is to sail for Europe
Tuesday. He said today he would
make a formal statement before ho
left.
Reaction In several esstern states
to the Idea of repudiating the plank
was not particularly favorable today.
Republican leaders In Vermont, New
Hampshire, and Connecticut Indl
cated they would stand by the plank
aa adopted by the national conven
tion. The Republican state con
ventlon of Maryland, which met In
Baltimore late in May, refused to
adopt a resolution committing Itself
to a repeat plank.
Dr. Butler described the plank on
prohibition adopted In Chicago as
having been "sired by muddle heads
out of cowardice" and as "the most
shocking exhibition of patronage
control of a convention since 1873,
when Ulysses 8. Grant won his sec
ond nomination."
