Two outstanding Events
The republicans left behind them
the memory of at least two events
which bid for places In political his
tory. One, of course, was the suddrn
upward surge of sentiment for prohi
bition repeal, curbed only after & real
convention battle. The other waa
the final , victory yesterday of Vice
President Curtis In his candidacy for
renomlnatlon.
For a time, even toward the end,
It appeared that Curtis waa on the
verge of defeat, despite the fact that
every key man itx the 'n vent ton un

running mate of 1038 kept on the
ticket. There waa wet opposition to
him. There was a movement for a
younger and more spectacular figure.
And there was an Important under
current growing out of the social war
which had been waged In Washington
over precedence, between Mr. Curtis'
sister, Mra. Dolly Gann, and Alice
Longworth,
Mrs. Gann Acttre
Against this combined opposition,
the Curtis people played an Interest
ing game. At their head was Mrs.
Gann herself, receiving constantly at
her hotel, present in a box at every
convention session. She had been at
work In fact for months beforehand,
making speeches to republican gath
erings far and wide, and In every one
of them she had praised the achieve
ments of the Hoover administration.
When the Curtis camp found. In
Chicago, that It needed the help of
the administration. It got it.
States lukewarm toward Curtis,
for Instance, but undecided where to
go, were advised to put up favorite
sons, and keep on the sidelines until
they saw how events were turning,
turning.
It worked very well. When the roll
waa called, the opposition was widely
split, and no one was within gunshot
of Curtis. He himself did not quite
have the needed majority, but under
the circumstances, the big Pennsyl
vania delegation quickly changed Its
vote to him.
