A BED TIME CONVERSATION
By Alice Judson Peale
A mother wsa tucking her 8-year-old
son into bed for tho night.
"Mother, why can't I sleep with
you?" the child asked suddenly.
"You know you never do. There Is
more fresh air, and everybody aleeps
much better when each person has
his own bed In his own room."
"Y, but I don't like to sleep all
by myself. Besides, fathers and mo
thers alwaya sleep in the same
room."
"That Is true, but they are the only
ones who do."
"Then I'll have to wait until I'm
grown up and married, won't V"
"Yes."
"Oh, dear, that seems an awfully
long time," he sighed, "but I surely
will be grown .up some day, won't
I?"
"Yes, certainly. Think how much
you've grown already. You were a
little tiny baby when you were born
and now you are so big that you
wear overalls snd mother has to keep
lengthening your clothes every few
months; Isn't that fine?"
"Yes." he answered contentedly
and snuggled under the covers.
This was a very sensible conver
sstlon. The child hsd spoken hon
estly of something which wss very
reel to him. He wss answered real
istically with proper appreciation of
his child's point of view.
Such conversations do more to
kep open a pathway of confidence
between parent and child than any
number of treats and gifts and spe
cial pleasures.
To the child It is a problem and
a most pressing one. that he is little,
thst he U excluded from grown-up
privileges.
Only the constsnt affection of his
parents and their reassurance that
he too will be grown up some day
help him over this difficult aspect
of being a child.

GOOD FOR PICNICS

lunch time comes
after several hours

this problem today. It may well mean
added, pleasure throughout the sum
mer. First of all. what sort of a picnic
is It to be? Where, at what time or
day and for what group of people? j
O all the discouraging things, try-i
lng to decide where to stop for lunch
is one of the best ways to spoil a pic-;
nlc. Why not give this part of the j
program to someone, let them be re-1
sponsible for It, and then enjoy their
choice? If It is an all-day picnic, it's
a fin Idea to take good substantial
food In portable cookers. You know
being out of doors and exercising, or
even riding, brings to everyone a
really healthy appetite. A lettuce
sandwich and a stuffed egg will not
satisfy this need, and who can be
happy with pains of hunger remind
ing them of a full refrigerator at
home? All of which means, fit the
food to the occasion. Make it plain,
with good flavor, and plenty of it!
And wrap It so that each kind Is'
kept by Itself In the best possible!
condition. That is what I'd call a good j
recipe for picnic food. Here are sug-!
