New Tork depsrtment store's bargain day rush were en acted here when three store of the Moscow swine trust offered the privi lege of buying sausage and ham without the necessity of standing In line to all those bringing to It stale bread. Seeking to stimulate It collection of feed for hogs, the awln trust ne. elected to take Into consideration the large number or those wanting sausage and ham and tne natural antlpnthy of the population born of long hour of patient waiting to buy food toward forming In queues tak their turn to ntr tn store. Hundreds of men and women wttn great packs of bread In their hand or trapned to their back besieged the three stores In an effort to get In. The ncramble became so great, not. withstanding that bread, like sau ssge and ham. Is rationed In such limited quantities as hardly to pro vide enough to grow stale, that th store finally had to revert to th queue system In an effort to pre serve order. One cltleen, In his hunger for ham or sausage, brought eight kilo of flour, which th tores refused to accept. He probably had been hoard Ing It for year. A number of customers tried to sell fresh bread without success, and later It was found that sales from the bread stores had soared enor mously during the period that the ham and sausage offer was in effect. After the three store had collect ed a ton and a half of stale bread before th first day ended th r dueed their price for th bread to three kopeck a kilo. Th action of th swine trust was severely crltlclsted by the newspapers which termed It speculation. His own experiences In tho war were so bizarre, so dramatic, so full of paths and heroism, that It had to take some fonn. It first form was that of a novel, almost as widely rea4 In Eu rope as "All Quiet on the Westers Front," but even that did not suffice. Trenker had to live over the story. In "The Doomed Battalion" Trent - er does not play the role that he en weieX In real life. As a matter of fact, he was the captain of the heroic band of the heroic soldier-guide who vol unteers to re-visit his native Ytllags) to ascertain the exsct moment when the mountain which they were e fending, is to be blown to atoms. Here la Lull Trenker's own story ex his war experience. The analogy be tween this story and the story o The Doomed Battalion" la as close as may be, with due deference to dra matic emphasis and literary license. When I was twenty years old, I was a mountain guide In the Australian Tyrol. I had lived all of my life In these ragged mountain.. In the little village of Cortina d'Ampezso. One day another guide came to me saying, "Oo quick to the village war has been declared. Austria had1 declared war on Siberia. That nigh 4C0 mountain men. Including myself. were loaded in box cars. I was shot through the thigh in one of the at tacks, enough to send me to the hos pital, when I got out. Z found Italy Is ad entered the war. and the prob lem of the defense of the Tyrol con fronted the Austrtans. I was called by the High Command and commis sioned to recruit the Kaiser-Jaeger from picked mountain men. We went Into position in the Dolo mites, the mountains I knew so weft just an hour or so's Journey from my own native village. It was my duty to hold these positions at any cost. difficult alignment, because th Italians had companies of similar skill assigned to take these very oom- mandlng peaks. We went into position on Mt. Laga vol. which frowned down upon Cor tina, from where most of the men had come. Cortina then became the division headquarters for the oc cupying Italian forces. We could see them down there, but couldn't fire a shell or a shot because the men wives and children and cattle were all down there. We knew that the Italian! had been ordered to take Mt. Lagarot; because of all the peaks, It was most strate gic. Opposite It was a peak named Tofano. To show how bard It was to capture these Inaccessible peaks which were of audi vast Importance, twelve of our men held Tofana for a whole year. Upon this peak we endured many hardships. We were 13.000 feet night It was winter and bitter cold. We couldn't dig In very much because it was practically aolld rock, but we blasted out caves and fought eheltor there. Continually we were under heavy bombardment from the ItaW Una who were resolved to shell us out of the Alps. In the winter of lBia-10, there wasi a terrific snowfall, about twenty feet deep. This saved us from any Italian attacks. The Italians lost as many men thla way as we, if not more, be cause they were on the lower slope and received the full force of the ava ls, he. One day one of the lookouts noticed! a lot of black specks in the enow be neath. Investigation proved that the Italians were drilling a tunnel thro the mountain, to undermine our posi tion tunneling up through the solid rock later we heard them drilling. This continued, day after day and we knew they were coming- closer and that soon they would place their charge of dynamite end blow us all to bits. It was a terrific strain. We could hear their drills but could da nothing- about It. The men became al most Insane with suspense couldn't sleep and got in hysterical quarrels with one another. Meanwhile, the high command Insisted that we hold i.agasot at any cost. We waited in a'.l twenty-two days. On the 32nd of June. 1019, It wee a moonlit night, clear end beautiful. Suddenly there was ft deep rumble and the whole mountain top quiver ed and burst Into pieces. Blue flames shot out in all directions and atones as large as houses rained down. For tunately, we were away from the main center of the explosion, and only lost seventy men. X believe the Ittllans lost more than that. Imme diately the Italians attacked, but wsl were ready for them and held our position. It was doubtless the most spectacular thing in the entire War. although few knew about It.
