On the same day Sheriff Ralph Jennings in a public state ment declared two of these witnesses, Smith and Goschen WERE present at the inquest. The following day, Coroner the inquest, in a sworn statement, confirmed Sheriff Jennings. District Attorney George Codding also declared Smith and Goschen were present at the inquest. Well, well. It appears that someone was er MISTAKEN. We feel it is only fair to Mr. Enright to hear his side of the case again. Were Messrs. Smith and Goschen present at the coroner's inquest or were they nott Was or was not Attorney Enright 's client correct when he said neither of them were there. We ask this only in the cause of the crusade with which we believe Mr. Enright is identified, to promote righteousness and truth and "drive the rascals out I" The Die Is Cast ' I 'HE astounding revelations of Tammy corruption, in the city of New Tork under Mayor Walker, brought out by Samuel Seabury, promise to become an important issue in the presidential campaign. If as reported, Mr. Seabury will demand the removal of Mayor Walker, then Governor Franklin Roosevelt will be placed between the devil and the deep blue sea. If he refuses to act, and should receive the democratic nomi nation, then he will be forced to carry the Tammany tiger and wise-cracking Jimmy, on his shoulders throughout the campaign an overwhelming political burden. 1 If he accepts the challenge, and removes the Mayor, then h6 will lose the support of Tammany at the democratic con vention and fail to get the united support of the New York delegation. LJERETOFORE the New York governor has been able to play both ends against the middle, retain the Tammany sup port without alienating the anti-Tammany sentiment up-state, or throughout the country. But with the transcript of testimony before the Hofstadter investigating committee, made public, this straddling the issue is no longer possible. Tha only hope for Governor Roosevelt, as we see it, is for him to show he is a true chip from the Roosevelt block, unsheath the Big Stick, crack the Tammany tiger over the head, kick out the gilded gigolo at the City Hall, and appeal to the God fearing and right-thinking people of his state and the country, for his vindication. Such action we believe is now his only hope of securing the democratic nomination, and winning the election in November. Who Is Looney Now! IN LOOKING over our files of three years ago we recently found some comment in this column on the high price of common stocks in relation to earning power. At the prices then prevailing many stocks paid loss than 3 percent some quoted at high figures paid nothing. It is interesting to note today, that the exact reverse is true. At present prices, many stocks are not only paying 8 and 10 percent, but as high as 18 percent. The relation of present prices to cash and quick assets is even more striking. In the current Forbes magazine 20 stocks are listed for example, whose cash assets (money and govern ment bonds in the hank) exceed the market value of the compiuiy on the stock exchange, at prevailing quotations. nite Motors is mentioned as a striking example. At its stock value of 7 3-4, this company could be purchased for ap proximately $5,000,000. According to its last statement it had $8,500,000 in cash and government bonds. It had receiv ables and merchandise worth $15,000,000. Factories and real estate were worth $14,000,000 more a grand total of $37,500, 000. Liabilities in current accounts only totalled $1,300,000 or a net worth of $36,200,000. In other words here is a corporation worth $36,000,000 which can be bought at the present market price for $5,000,000. Or to express it in another way, this corporation could buy out all its stockholders, with cash it has in the bank, and still have $3,500,000 left in cash and government bonds, as a reserve 1 e e e A S FORBES magazine states, this business and the others mentioned, are regarded by Wall Street as worth more dead than alive. They could close down now and sell out, and each stockholder who purchased at present quotations would realize a tremendous profit, in the case of White Motors at least 500 percent! This would be at FORCED sale value. We can think of no more striking example of how we Amer icans love to go to extremes insist upon doing so in fact. From the insane heights of 1929, we have rushed to the even more insane liepth of 1932. And nothing is more certain than this (unless the country is going to the dogs entirely, in which case nothing financial matters) namely: Those who get into the bear market now before it goes up, are going to profit, juat as those profited who got out of the bull market before it went down. Jeremiah, whose specialty was lamenting, wrote "There is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet." You may substi tute "Wall Street" for "sea" and it will still be accurate. There is sorrow in Wall Street, and it, also, cannot be quiet. Yesterday morning when "the street" heard that the budget was balanced, stocks went up and all was as gay as the playing of fountains at Versailles. Then somebody began think ing, and the fountains stopped spouting. The thinker, perhaps, said to himself: "The budget is balanced IF" the budget balancing is done on the as sumption that "socking the rich" will yield all that is hoped for. As well rely on selling horns of the unicorn. There are no unicorns, altho you may see them ornamenting Gothic tapestry, and Britain's coat of arms. Also, there are few rich left to be "socked." You could say of New York, lair of the ''rich, what the same Jeremiah aald of another great city. "Concerning Damascus. Hamath la counfounded and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings; they are faint-hearted." Pick out any two of the former "very rich and they will answer the description of Hamath and Ar pad. However, it wilt pass, and you will be buying stocks, and wonder ing why you did not buy at the bottom. New York City may be In some ways like Damascus In the days ol Jeremiah, but New York has more money. 'Yesterday, Mr. Berry, New York's comptroller, announced that he had collected In one day more than seventy-four million dollars In taxes, more than on the same day In 1931. To some extent, the misfortunes of property owners stimulate tax pay ing. A man with a mortgage must pay taxes or have his mortgage foreclosed. Many that would let taxes run dare not do so, on ac count of the mortgage holder. The senate, on Tuesday, voted to tax 100 per cent all Incomes earned through violations of state or federal laws. This Indicates the opinion that our government Is more efficient, collecting taxes, than In stopping crime. And that opinion Is sound. We collect; we do not check crime. With a one hundred per cent tax bootleggers, racketeers, and the army of crooked politicians will have noth ing more to do with banks or safe deposits. Even the big tin box at home will not be safe from a vigi lant government prying. One million Britishers went to tee April the Fifth' a 100-to- out sider, win the derby. Millions were lost on the favorite. The king. Queen Mary and all their children saw the horses run, and the night before the derby, Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam, our Atlantic ocean filer, danced three times with the Prince of Wales at a charity ball. It was an exciting day and! night In London. Senator Carter Glass of Virginia believes he has a better plan than the Ooldsborcugh bill for Increasing the money supply. He would make all government bonds eligible ss a basts for Issuing currency, thus in creasing the supply of currency in circulation by about a billion dollars. One billion would help, but It Is lees than ten dollars per Inhabitant and the country needa more. Congress, seeking to make Itselt popular, rejected a "sales tax.1 But; you will find a good Imitation of salee tax whtn the new bill go into effect. ; It will cost more for letter post age. A SCHOOL FOB NE A few cat our old subscribers may remember, but for the benefit of new ones who have discovered this column since the first ses sion of the school we had better let the preceptress be gin her recital all over: "I have a lit tle girl aged 4 who Is perfect ly healthy, yet on the slightest provocation she vomits. The finest ped iatricians in the city say It's a habit and nothing else, but they offer no remedy for such a habit, At this point, In the first session, we broke In on the ecital to say what we think about pedlatric'Mis, which Is precious little. On this oc casion suffice to remark that the neurotic disposition manifests itself In the readiness with which the par ents of the child ran to the special ists. At least that is what It spells to my mind. "You see, she is a poor eater little or no appetite, has to be coaxed and pleaded with to eat I have tried 'not forcing' but taking her plate away and put ting her to bed without food. I get ner vous Indigestion before I've even looked at food. Is there nothing I can do be sides scold, spank or lock In a chest? It will be a terrible example for another baby to have to continue like this." believed that we must leave the gold basis and our dollars might not be worth much. Interesting la the theory that the dollar's value de pends on a small lump of gold, put away In some safe, rather than on thlnga that the dollar can buy. - The "United Fanners of Canada" denounce the gold standard saying e consider that Inflation or counter deflation would be of great value at the present time." Canada, actually Is not on the gold standard, since you cannot get gold In exchange for Canadian money. And no part of the world would be on the gold standard If the people should suddenly demand their gold. There Isn't enough gold In the world to pay the deposits In our savings banks. However, the Idea that we are actually on the gold standard seems to comfort many, and cannot hurt any one. M A Jury at Peoria. HI., indicates that the public la tired of kidnap ing. Eight men were convicted of the kidnaping of Dr. James W. Parker yesterday. Four were sen tenced to 35 years In prison, one to 15, one to seven, two to five years each. The state asked the death penalty for four of the kidnapers. Jenkins' Comment (Continued from Page One) were produced to show that the agri cultural college is badly crowded already and needs more buildings to handle Its present student body. So It would certainly need a lot of new buildings to handle the stu dent bodies of both Institutions. SUPPOSE you and your neighbor, tlvtnff In Mrtsaratae, hmuuv both over-crowded, decide to move to gether Into ONE house, abandoning the other one. You will save a little money on light and heat and water, but you will still hare to eat and you will still have to wear clothes. You will require Juat as much food snd cloth - ing In one house aa you formerly required In two. And If you have to rebuild the ONE house you move Into In order to make It large enough to accom- modate both families, you will find hat the cost of the mcve Use been greater than the savlnga. THAT, In is the a this wrlter'a Judgment way this proposed cor. cMUMon measure would work c RVOCS IMPOSITION The right course to follow In any such case Is one of calm Indifference. Place proper food before the child at the regular meal time, and then give the child's appetite, eating or failure to eat no further attention. Ignore the whole thing. There must be no discussion of the child's appetite or failure to eat this or that or even the child's refusal of this or that Item of food. Indeed, such discus sion of food, appetite, eating, diges tion or nutrition tvt table Is always out of place and always harmful to everybody present, especially to an invalid or a near-invalid. Anything and everything else but food should be discussed at table. To threaten punishment If the child doesn't eat this or that Item of the menu, or to inflict punishment for such shortcomings, is Idiotic and cannot fall to do harm In any case. It Is a good rule to set a reason able time for a meal, aay fifteen min utes for breakfast, twenty for lunch, and half an hour for dinner, and re quire the child to remain at table that legnth of time as a matter of etiquette, whether the time Is de voted to the business of eating or not. If child rebels at taking raw egg mixed with other food, but will eat egg scrambled or fried or hard boil ed or poached, why. It Is surely more hygienic to serve the egg the way the child prefers It. If the child doesn't like eggs in any way, shape or man ner, no matter. Even If he doesn't like spinach, no matter. It la absurd to try to compel a child to eat spin ach or egg or oatmeal If he hates the afiff, that is, if your Intent Is to make the child healthy and strong. Trouble with a lot of plain people is they know so many thlnga about the diet of children which ain't so. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Muffler Needed My husband, aged 61, keeps every one in the house awake, he snores so hard. (Mrs. A. Answer Send me a photographic record of his snoring and I can Judge which type and what cause It. In the majority of cases of the death rattle type It Is due to relaxation of the soft palate and the falling of this and the base of the tongue back against the rear wall of the throat. Very good. All you need do is fix the scoundrel so he will not roll onto his back In sleep. He mus sleep rather prone, that is, belly down, or in the Sims or left lateral semi-prone posi tion which keeps the soft palate and base of tongue forward by gravity. Better no pillow or only a low one. Moreover one who snores should AL WAYS have cool or cold air to breathe all night and NEVER have heavier covers than comfort demands, (Copyright John F.
